Re: Voter ID laws
Why are you equating crossing national borders with internal voter ID requirements? Because they are both issues of law and order. All countries require foreign visitors to present passports when entering or leaving. Nothing unique about Canada. All countries also enforce their borders. Why such fl...

Re: Canada and Quebec...... Anglophone Vote Suppression?
Well it's a real question. anderson demonstrated unequivocally that scads and scads of non-whites cannot procure a photo id (passport included) and of course his country will not let anyone in anymore without a passport. How did Canada get so racist? What is it about non-whites that Canadians hate?...

Re: Voter ID laws
So you're OK with the idea of someone having to have some government issued photo ID, just because? I mean, here in Canada, it's normal for everyone to have at least one piece, since we're a bunch of commie socialists with universal healthcare, so the provinces issue cards for access. But in the US...

Re: What am I missing?
. . to see this as politically motivated rather than motivated by concerns for integrity of voter authentication. Ummmmm . . . is there a difference? Yeah. Politically motivated in terms of the groups who don't have ID tend to vote predominantly in certain directions and being of large enough numbe...

Re: Voter ID laws
So you're OK with the idea of someone having to have some government issued photo ID, just because? . . Don't know what it's like where y'all live, but up here I must show my voter registration card in order to vote. No photo. Why would adding a photo to something already required be problematic? G...

Re: Voter ID laws
There's always been some form of authentication and registration though. I'm not sure what it adds to the process that isn't already handled. Seems to add extra effort out of proportion to actual gains. I don't think it takes a lot of digging beneath the surface to see this as politically motivated ...

Re: Voter ID laws
People understand here that there are whole swaths of the US population, predominantly amongst the poor, who live their lives without government issued photo ID? They don't drive, so they don't have a driver's license. They don't travel, so they don't have a passport. There's nothing malicious about...

Re: The End of Marijuana Prohibition
http://www.regulatemarijuana.org/tancredo Colorado is ending marijuana prohibition. This may just be the thing that revives the Republican party. What's your sense on the chances for this thing? I recall there was a similar proposition a few years back in California that polled well leading up to b...

Re: Surveillance Society
Here is a cameraless way to probably get the same results... http://www.progressive.com/auto/snapshot.aspx That's pretty wild. The person gets a better rate if they agree to that and drive properly? I wonder whether the same sort of idea will cross over to other insurance, like health and life down...

Re: The Syria Thread
Yup. Mahdavi speculation / expectation is a pretty important part of the Shi'i experience, and the Sufyani is one of the figures associated with this eschatological expectation. There's been a lot of talk in Shi'i forums over the last year speculating that some Salafi extremist from amongst the hord...

Re: Surveillance Society
The tapes are only for investigation purposes. No one really listens to a black box on an airplane unless some something goes wrong. Same with the video camera in the elevator. I doubt there will be software that looks at anything. They'll view the tape if he crashes or if he gets a speeding ticket...

Re: Surveillance Society
A little creepy and invasive for the driver, but a great tool for focussed ongoing/refresher training pinpointed on actual gaps in driver performance. Should improve safety margins if used effectively. Figure they will fire us all and get drivers that act like machines Eh. I mean, your supervisors ...

Re: The Syria Thread
Sufyani Abu Hurayrah has narrated that the Prophet said: A man will emerge from the depths of Damascus. He will be called Sufyani. Most of those who follow him will be from the tribe of Kalb. He will kill by ripping the stomachs of women and even kill the children. A man from my family will appear ...

Re: London Olympics 2012
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/5489/towerbridgeolympics.jpg I am intrigued as to what foreigners made of the opening ceremony. I thought it was brilliant, but full of subtle cultural references that must only be meaningful to natives (e.g the Shipping forecast, the theme tune to the BBC soap Ea...

Re: Spengler Discovers Dangerous Circumcision
It says a lot about the level of the conversation here that the most substantial retort seems to be some mumblings about it being harder for a kid to jerk off in the future. Right. Anyway, based on the admittedly anecdotal evidence of the reports of some Jewish roommates from university and the writ...

Re: Spengler Discovers Dangerous Circumcision
Ah, so circumcision should not be allowed because someday we might invent a vaccine for something that it helps prevent now. Circumcision should not be performed without consent because its benefits are marginal (at best) and because the change is irreversible. There is no loss of efficacy if the p...

Re: Spengler Discovers Dangerous Circumcision
Zach, lets sum it all up. Medically, there are a few benefits. There's some varying evidence as to how big, but at a minimum, some marginal medical benefits. It's a little easier for parents to deal with hygiene in the diaper years. Aesthetically, most tend to agree it looks better. Chix diggit. Ane...

Re: Spengler Discovers Dangerous Circumcision
Unlike nails, Milo, foreskins do not grow back when clipped. And unlike umbilical cords, foreskins do not fall off naturally. The argument here isn't just about whether circumcision is 'natural' or not -- it is a permanent, irreversible change that impacts the functionality of a part of the body th...
