Re: North American Thread

Kansas going commie in 1953 was far more plausible. I think that it is far worse that simply "crazy talk". Rather is it rank opportunism of the lowest form: promoting a non-existent threat in an attempt to fan the fires of irrational fears and thereby appeal to the worst in voters. You hi...

Re: Occupy the Globe

I'm no fan of our elite overlords but I think the Occupy movement has mostly itself to blame for this. They haven't even generated any ideas yet! Every now and then I still see self-proclaimed Occupy emissaries invited to talk about the "working groups" they're involved with and which they...

Re: North American Thread

By the way, does anyone -- anyone -- think that Sharia Law is actually a threat to the West? Why would Americans adopt Sharia Law? This sounds like a bunch of crazy talk to me.

Re: North American Thread

Well, no, not really . . not really "ignorance" that is when half the stuff one hears is from the mouths of mad mad Mad mad mad mad Mullahs, some poor woman forced to marry her rapist, and such. That's what I'm getting at. Where is the stuff you're hearing coming from? How can you claim t...

Maybe you don't realize this but "Rhubarb" is betting big on Asia. He's had fancy offices in luxury high-rises in Roppongi and Central for a long, long time now.

Re: North American Thread

Second, all I know about Islam is what I see on the news: women having to marry their rapists, women with their noses cut off, burkhas, head scarves, car bombs, you-get-the-idea. If all that is a perversion of Islam, I'll take your word for it and be glad to hear it. Isn't this an admission of igno...

Re: The Coming Plague Wars

1/ anthrax is naturally virulent rather than a designer microbe; and Sure but is it easy to obtain in concentrated form? Is it likely those attacks were carried out by angry Saudi twenty-somethings? I doubt it. 2/ is that it is highly unlikely that the accused was the perpetrator. The fact that he ...

Re: The Coming Plague Wars

. . . Terrorists are often very decentralized. So far, this has prevented them from being particularly dangerous, but I wouldn't be so confident as to say a nightmare scenario could never ever happen. It's not impossible. However, it's a question of relative risk - is it probable? I think it's too ...

Re: The Coming Plague Wars

Luckily it takes a great deal of reason and logic to manufacture a virulent plague. All it takes is one depressed, suicidal scientist. Don't think for a moment that someone with access to such a laboratory cannot become a victim of his emotions. Perhaps. However, no such scientist would work in iso...

Re: The Coming Plague Wars

The problem with plagues is that they are not specific, the populations which the terrorists believe they represent are equally likely to be adversely affected. You have too much faith in reason and logic. A sufficiently disgruntled person bent on causing as much death as possible wouldn't care who...

Re: North American Thread

This past July, for the first time ever, I was stopped by Canadians on the US-Canada border. I had to exit my car and wait inside while they searched it (for a long time) and was subjected to a brief but intimidating mini-interrogation before being allowed to pass. Oh, Canada! What happened to you?

Re: Wukan Revolt

Interesting. Given that the villagers claim to be receiving food from nearby villages while also blocking off all access to government officials, I can't help but be skeptical about how this is being reported.
