Re: Religion

It isn't that simple, Azari. In Exodus God proclaims different types of laws. The ten commandments are how we are to honor God and are completely non-negotiable. But a bit later in Exodus, God gives a rather disorganized bunch of laws designed to aid the peaceful cohesiveness of the community. These...

Re: Merry Christmas

Again, in all three Abrahamic religions God requires mediation from humanity in order to establish a lawful order. Why? Isn't this a Protestant Christian interpretation ? No. Moses and Muhammad (in the Hijira) both had to negotiate divine law with God and make it possible for human compliance. The ...

Pass the STRIP act, and within 24 hours a brass pole will be installed at all TSA search points and the TSA agents will be instructed to direct everyone there and body search them with a $1 bill.

Re: Merry Christmas

These guys are getting Easter and Christmas mixed up, Azari. That's why it is not rhyming. In Christian understanding Christ was no envoy. He was God himself. The question is why might God desire to temporarily experience the completeness of humanity from the inside out? In all Abrahamic religions ...

Re: Egypt

What we know is that in the one independent country where the Muslim Brotherhood has taken power (Tunisia), it has been moderate, pro-human rights, and has shared power with more secular parties. Assuming that Egypt will turn in to Saudi Arabia or Iran at this time is presumptuous, to say the least...

First, I would like honest voting. Then we can puzzle out what works about the electoral college and what doesn't.

Re: The Nature of Moral Law

The implementation is the religion - it's the living, practical embodiment of the idea. If you are going to take that approach, then discussion of religion becomes impossible. You would have to treat every sect/denomination/usool al-fiqh as a separate entity. In the case of independent Christian ch...

Re: The Great Global Crossing Robbery: By the Regulators!

No doubt there has been considerable behind-the-scene shenanigans regarding the MF Global incident. However, how many imminent crashes has the ZH site predicted in the last year? ZH didn't predict the MF Global meltdown, did it? I'd be astounded if they predicted something this specific. It isn't t...

Re: The Nature of Moral Law

The essential idea behind natural moral law is that it is objectively derived directly from human nature and the nature of the world.

Any idea that divinity is involved must be excluded or you have confused the question.

Re: North American Thread

That dog won't hunt, Nonc. First, Lewis was an apologist; Lewis was not a rationalist. That's what I said. Apologetics is a rational method of explaining religion, made by logical argument and not by revelation. Second, nature itself is revelatory. See the first chapter of Paul's letter to the Roma...

Religion, morality, laws and revelations

I quite disagree, Nonc, as did C. S. Lewis and others. The Moral Law is written on every human heart. It is not some projection of modernity, but has rather been there since time began, written, as it were, into the very fabric of the cosmos, and as recorded in Lewis' Illustrations of the Tao refer...

Re: North American Thread

No such thing as "moral law" or natural religion. That is all a projection of Western modernity and its' need to reduce Jesus to someone logically understandable by the 19th century mind. It is unrecognizable by non-Western cultures. A Christian should be able to see the distortion of Chri...
