Protests in Iranian City Where ‘Everything Is Covered in Brown Dust’

By THOMAS ERDBRINKFEB. 19, 2017

TEHRAN — Days of protests over dust storms, power failures and government mismanagement in one of Iran’s most oil-rich cities subsided on Sunday after security forces declared all demonstrations illegal.

Residents of Ahvaz, a city with a majority Arab population near the border with Iraq, had been protesting for five days in increasingly large gatherings, shown in cellphone video clips shared on social media.

The region around Ahvaz is a center of oil production in Iran, and since economic sanctions were lifted, Iran’s government has been hoping for foreign investment in the area to update refineries and power stations and fix deepening ecological problems.

The cellphone clips show protesters calling for the resignation of the local governor. And as the number of demonstrators grew, the demands started to include a call for top officials from the capital, Tehran, to come to Ahvaz to see the problems for themselves.

Demonstrators can also be heard shouting, “Unemployment, unemployment,” another big problem in the region, and urging their countrymen to offer assistance: “Iranian compatriots, help us, help us.”

In the weeks before the demonstrations, Ahvaz was hit by large dust storms. Rain turned the dust into mud, which caused power stations to stop working.

Oil production was also affected, with the Ministry of Petroleum reporting that production had temporarily fallen by 700,000 barrels a day.

Unfortunately, one of the most profound effects of Persia sprinkles is the irresistible urge to migrate to the Western Hemisphere.

The first credible claim for the development of a real postal system comes from Ancient Persia

Persian empire was vast .. so , every 50 km , there was a resting place with fresh horses .. called Carvan Sara (Caravanserai) .. government mail were sent by special horse riders .. they rode day and night .. arriving on one Caravanserai, new rider and fresh horses took over for the next trip .. 24/7 .. so, a decree was sent from one side the empire to other (1000s of miles) within a week.

many of these Caravanserai now renovated .. the most famous one made to the most beautiful Hotel in all ME.

Iran's Abbasi :
The Middle East's most beautiful hotel

(CNN)Flick through almost any travel magazine these days and you're bound to come across an article hailing Iran as the next big destination.

Prompting the spike in interest in the Islamic Republic is recent geopolitical wrangling in the shape of a nuclear deal with world powers that has ended some longstanding sanctions.

But while the country is trying to modernize its tourism industry in the face of increasing visitor numbers -- 5.2 million came in 2016 and more are expected in 2017 -- its more traditional offerings still have the potential to charm.

None more so than the Abbasi Hotel, an opulent if careworn establishment located in the ancient city of Esfahan.

It's a place like no other.

Esfahan has its fair share of historical wonders (some which are UNESCO World Heritage sites), but in many ways the Abbasi has become a tourist attraction in its own right.

Built around 300 years ago, under the Safavid dynasty reign of Shah Sultan Husayn, it was originally used as a pit stop for merchants traveling the ancient Silk Road.

Not letting women wear what they want is oppressive and idiotic.

Iran needs 2:256 carved prominently on every public building - "THERE SHALL BE no coercion in matters of faith"

Sure, plenty of Christians and Jews in elected positions in Iran. Illegal for mullas to discriminate against females.
No hijab, no problem. Chessmasters can compete internationally without censure!

Take Persian lime, squeeze out sweet juice of freedom into the dirt, Iran is the bitter pulp left over. Only a faint aroma left to remind the world of what the mad mullahs destroyed.

Interesting post

Remember when having a violin or Piano was a capital sin in China ? ? .. they said Mao destroyed China

And ? ?

Same happening in Iran

As said, this a "Cultural Revolution".

If you mean mad mullahs destroyed what was "Shah's time culture", true .. but , Iranians were not happy with that "culture"

Art usually mirrors what is happening in a society .. Iranian films and music now show Iran back to old culture and Civilization.

Whether woman can swim in Bikini or have to cover their hair not metrics for culture or civilization.

mad mullahs powerless to influence Iranian culture or development.

Re Iranian woman, you wrong thinking this mad mullahs doing, not at all.

Persian culture was (still is) a male-chauvinist culture, Shah time same .. now, woman are educated, new generation girls all 100% educated and changing the rules .. head cover not even a footnote, but, many important women rights now changing, divorce law (as marriage is a binding contract in Iran, most new wed girls put in marriage contract "sole right" for divorce for themselves), child custody, property etc etc .. men do not accept all this yet, but they will have to swallow .. that is why # of marriages down, birth rate down .. mad mullahs nothing to do with all these, it is between the young generation girls and boys, they will fight it out, mad mullahs have zero say in this

These kind of developments must come from within, wanting to force things by legislation silly (Turkey, Atta-Turk forbid, now things revert to old good days).

Iran will come out of all this much stronger, same as China did

American antagonism towards Iran big mistake .. Iranians look(ed) to America to help Iran to rise on it's 2 feet after 100's of years of colonial powers beating on Iran .. America getting bad advice :D

To Veil or Not to Veil
That is a Complex Question

Europeans, excellent policy, engage Iranian society by including many women in their political and economic and social delegations .. that is excellent help and news for Iranian woman fighting for their emancipation.

Talk is now for a Woman President in Iran .. might come sooner than you might think.
