Of course you can buy a gun. And you can fire it at a range or in some designated hunting area.

No. I can try to look them up if you need information.

Eh, no need to do the work, but if you could give me some search key words to english sources if any I would be curious, cuz you always need fallbacks. Could be your neighbor before long, and would bring a whole bunch of gun nut teabaggers with me.

Frankly, I don't see you living outside the US.

But, anyway, it seems that the Romanian legislation was updated in 2004 in order to make it compliant with the European Union's rules and we are now classed as "restrictive" by something called gunpolicy.org. The official website of the Romanian Police does not have an English version, but here's the Romanian text. As far as I can tell, the 1996 law is out and with it went the possibility of owning a gun because you felt the unsafe. You can still own hunting rifles or declare yourself a collector, but it seems that the authorities do their best to make life hard for you.

Bummer. Looks like Romania is not gun friendly.

I've thought a lot about it, and my current assessment is that a 223 is best for suppressive fire, a 6.8 type is best for select fire, and 308 is probably best for combat of any kind of range. So you have to have 3 guns, period.

The only caveat would be hollow point 70 grain 223, that may be an adequately lethal round.

Going to start adding some stuff about how moviestv get guns wrong. I think of course even the laymen can pick out a lot of things that are wrong (the guy hanging upside down from the careening chopper forehead shooting the bad guy on the other side of the plaza) but when you've been shooting a while some things just smack you in the face. The following is a twofer.

The short range sniper.

Often times you'll see a sniper using a huge fricking sniper rifle to shoot someone on the other side of a city street. This is unrealistic in a couple of ways.

1) They always "assemble" a gun to do it, including the scope. They bring the gun in a case then put it together. Not only have I never ever ever ever ever seen an actual sniper or any proficient long range shooter use a put together gun, but no sniper in the world risking jail would ever ever ever ever ever shoot a gun at any distance using a scope they just attached, let alone just hand assembled. Ever. Only a gun that had a recently confirmed zero and then not touched would ever be used.

2) The monster big sniper gun with the 20 pound scope is completely unnecessary. A $600 .40 cal handgun off the shelf with a basic optic is both plenty lethal and plenty accurate at that range and infinitely easier to get in or out with. A large honking gun to shoot across the street is really dumb. Arguably if you wanted to blow someone's head off instead of just a more tidy hole Thompson Center makes this handgun that shoots rifle cartridges and you can shoot a 308 even out of that barrel and still blow heads off, with a basic optic. 100 times more practical than a Barrett, for across the street work. If I were to do that I would go Thompson Center.

2a) The Jack Bauer, grab some rifle out of the locker and then make sniper shots with it is also a nonstarter. Any precision shooter would put many rounds through a gun before going into a real situation.

It's just gear porn for the movies.

CHINA’S ‘LASER ASSAULT RIFLE’ CAN SILENTLY SEAR FLESH FROM A HALF MILE AWAY
“The whole person will be set on fire.”

the ZKZM-500 fires an energy beam undetectable to the human eye that can pass through glass and cause the “instant carbonization” of human flesh from half a mile away.

Should not be silent. It needs to go, “Wok, Wok, Wok…”
