China views the United States as a declining power, but at the same time believes that Washington is trying to fight back to undermine, and even disrupt, the economic and military growth that point to China’s becoming the world’s most powerful country . .

.
. . level of strategic distrust between the two countries has become so corrosive that if not corrected the two countries risk becoming open antagonists.

The United States is no longer seen as “that awesome, nor is it trustworthy, and its example to the world and admonitions to China should therefore be much discounted,” Mr. Wang writes of the general view of China’s leadership.

In contrast, China has mounting self-confidence in its own economic and military strides, particularly the closing power gap since the start of the Iraq war. In 2003, he argues, America’s gross domestic product was eight times as large as China’s, but today it is less than three times as large.

Then maybe I am more like an Easterner.....

Israel....... South Korea........ France.... and even Britain .....
Friendship developed last few 1000 yrs
Friendship for Uz can develop much faster...... South Korea.......

And be lost fast too....... Afghans...... Betrayer of Benefactor.........
Iranians consider America still a friend, unless facts to contrary is proven
Likewise...........

Maybe if lucky, change back fast too.......

Forget Embassy, Mossadegh...... Apologize for Iran Air..... Work on Space Program together with Izzies......

Individually and collectively....... All have program but help each other........

Have to figure out how to keep mouths shut (including Uz) and work together...... Make peace........
Issue not whether eat dogs
Is an issue.... not apply to Chinese family members & friends but when dogs found in refrigerator of local Chinese Restaurant  :o

Stop going there...... Wonder if where missing dogs went  ....... Not want to eat friends & family members  ......
Brits no friend of you guys ..
Problem is Brits are cultural ancestors, more or less same language, often behave better than uz (slavery, Indians), brothers in arms against inherent evil of Nazis and pretty bad evil of Soviets....

Even so you right about Mossadegh... even a good friend can get you in trouble......
Said many times Iranians friend of Rhubarb, that last few 1000 yrs
Under Cyrus the G_d endorsed King etc..... YES!....... May Cyrus be forever remembered as Righteous among Men....

After Mo....... Not as much..... Better than Euros though......... After Khomenei
not so with that Bedouin from the desert empire
Perhaps....... AIUI Bedouin in Sinai like Izzies better than eGypsies  .........

Lot depend..... Better to convert to Shia...... But often better to be Dhimmi to Sunni....... Shia more hung up on purity........
America should listen to GERMANS and not Brits and French
Should listen to Germans about engineering & the Space Program :D

Should listen to the Brits for comedy  & maybe culture...

Should listen to French about food & cooking :ugeek: 8-) .... maybe other things.... Nuke power maybe though maybe Canadians better

Think Alexis is pretty smart  ........

The good guys in Europe are the Germans
IMVHO not so much........

I am tempted to put a line of LOLs........ But to be diplomatic I won't...

Germany the unmerciful debtor to Greece........ Germany who we Mericans bailed out recently.... IIRC 2008.........

Germany is important.... technically excellent.......... admire kurzarbeit....... but in total IMVHO even less of a good guy than we uz sinners are....

Remember........ Brits invent concentration camp  BUT Germans pre Nazi invent EXTERMINATION camp    in Africa........

Need/Want Germans to go to Moon, Asteroids, Orbitals, Planets & Stars too..........

NYer | The God of Gamblers
Why Las Vegas is moving to Macau.
American casino companies have raced to move in. In 2006, Steve Wynn, who led a revival of Las Vegas in the nineteen-nineties, opened a casino in Macau; he makes more than two-thirds of his global profits there. He is learning to speak Chinese, and he talks about moving his corporate headquarters to Macau. “We’re really a Chinese company now, not an American company,” he has said. Macau has become especially attractive to American corporations in the last few years. In Nevada, after tourism sank in 2008, gaming revenue plunged by nearly twenty per cent in two years, the largest decline in the state’s history. It later improved, but Nevada still has the highest unemployment and foreclosure rates in the country. Gary Loveman, the chairman of Caesars Entertainment, was one of the few casino bosses who passed up a chance to build in Macau. “Big mistake,” he said later. “I was wrong, I was really wrong.” Even by China’s standards, the speed of Macau’s growth is breathtaking; for a decade, the economy has ballooned, on average, nineteen per cent a year—nearly twice as fast as mainland China’s. In 2010, high rollers in Macau wagered about six hundred billion dollars, roughly the amount of cash withdrawn from all the A.T.M.s in America in a year.

The United States government has come to believe that the cash changing hands on the tables in Macau is only a small part of the picture. “The growth of gambling in Macau, fuelled by money from mainland Chinese gamblers and the growth of U.S.-owned casinos, has been accompanied by widespread corruption, organized crime, and money laundering,” according to the 2011 annual report by the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China. The place has emerged as the “Macau Laundry Service,” as U.S. diplomats put it in an internal cable in 2009. Juan Zarate was a senior counterterrorism official in the Bush Administration who worked on sanctioning a private bank in Macau that allegedly facilitated, among other things, the financing of nuclear proliferation by North Korea. “Anyone who knows anything about anti-money laundering understands both the inherent and the real risks in Macau,” Zarate said. “You have an admixture of commercial-financial activity, a way station for people and goods, a casino sector, all in a potentially volatile regional environment.” David Asher, who was a State Department senior adviser for East Asian and Pacific Affairs in the Bush Administration, calls Macau “a cesspool” of financial crimes. “It’s gone from being out of a James Bond movie to being out of ‘The Bourne Identity,’ ” he said.

Lovely place, I can't recommend it highly enough. Where else can you hobnob with Triads, Cantonese farmers, international millionaires, Catholic priests, and Russian prostitutes all within blocks of one another? If you're in Macau stick to the Peninsula and check out a various Portuguese colonial era forts, cathedrals, Taoist temples and so forth, and make sure to sample the excellent colonial Portuguese cuisine. In contrast, the casinos on the Cotai strip are a prime example of worthless mall culture, virtually identical to their Vegas counterparts.

The stench of international financial corruption was much stronger in Zurich, IMHO (also a lovely city).

Probably. I found Las Vegas to be remarkably boring. A pachinko parlour on growth hormones.

But how funny would that be? PLA owns tons of factories; it would be a hoot if the generals just up and decided that the vestigial Reds were simply bad for business.

The CCP and the military are very intertwined, but collectively they are in control of the entire nation top to bottom, so if there were a coup the figures at the very top would change but the rest of the country would chug along without incident. It would not be an issue of Army vs. Reds, but one individual being bad for business and replacing him with another individual.

I, and many people much more qualified than me, have said for years that China isn't communist. They've got their own, very Chinese, thing going that has more to do with their historical imperial bureaucracy than Marxism. They just keep calling the Mandarins the CCP.

Quite.

The website of Chinese newspaper, People's Daily, has raised 1.4bn yuan ($222m; £138m) via its initial public offering, nearly three times the amount it had originally planned to raise.

Macanese food is exhibit A, ethnically Chinese Catholic bishops Jose are exhibit B. On the peninsula there are plenty of extant colonial-era buildings, and in most of the historic cathedrals the pews have largely been taken over by Cantonese. The Macanses (mixed Chinese/Portuguese) population is down to something like %2, but the unique Mediterranean/Pearl River culture fusion hasn't been completely subsumed by casino/mall culture quite yet. I liked it enough that I now want to visit Goa and Belem as well.

But in 50 years? It might be all gone. Old alcoholic Brits who washed up there were writing about how the "old days" were dead and gone by the 1920's, so it's always doom and gloom on the South China Sea.

Greetings all... :|

Typhoon (Ubu Hex @ at.net) invited me to join. I can't say I'm too excited about joining another Splenger expat bar. But after browsing randomly for 10 mins, this place doesn't seem quite as red neck as I thought. So I decide to register just to be friendly.

To put my cards on the table, I disagree with almost all of you on almost everything. That is my piece.

I shall decide if further elaboration is needed.
