In late 2016, shortly after the U.S. presidential election, two Harvard political scientists posed a bleak question in The New York Times:“ Is Donald Trump a Threat to Democracy ? ” Now they’re out with an even more bleakly titled book — How Democracies Die — that seeks to answer that question by drawing on a year’s worth of evidence.

Republicans Have Four Easy Ways to #ReleaseTheMemo — and the Evidence for It. Not Doing So Will Prove Them to Be Shameless Frauds.
[...]
Given the significance of this issue, it is absolutely true that the memo should be declassified and released to the public — and not just the memo itself. The House Intelligence Committee generally and Nunes specifically have a history of making unreliable and untrue claims (its report about Edward Snowden was full of falsehoods, as Bart Gellman amply documented, and prior claims from Nunes about “unmasking” have been discredited). Thus, mere assertions from Nunes — or anyone else — are largely worthless; Republicans should provide American citizens not merely with the memo they claim reveals pervasive criminality and abuse of power, but also with all of the evidence underlying its conclusions.
[...]
It is possible this memo is sort of a half nothing-burger. Also Ben Shapiro and Scott Adams point this out. Russia-gate might be nearing its expiration date with indictments on the horizon against democratic foul players, but Republicans creating a nothing-burger themselves could wipe out their advantage that was given them for free.

Trump can't wait too long releasing the memo; more importantly, deliver the evidence or at least very probably cause. Assuming he has seen solid evidence it could be he is choosing his moment and wants to wait for the right moment to deliver a lethal uppercut, for instance close to the midterm elections.

I fear however the nothing-/fake-burger: it seems to be the DC kitchen's specialty. Sometimes facts and evidence beat the most skilled persuasion.

It should take congress about 19 days to release it.

The Donald himself would do well not getting in the way of whatever it is, as it would just fuel "Trump is playing dirty because..." narratives.

They will try the same thing with the Republican congress but it won't stick as well when it's claimed that all the Republican representatives are Russian collusion agents too (which I've already heard floated out there).

My take is the more damaging and incriminating the evidence is, the less likely it is to be released.

There seems to be symbiotic relationship between the two parties, sparing over minor issues, parsing words endlessly, and feigning outrage, or indignation, are all "OK" by the unwritten rules. Delivering a serious kick to the groin is considered both poor form and off-limits.

"Political opposition" In the US always reminds me of boxing or martial arts sparing between friends, or an even better example, the showmanship of WWF professional wrestling. US politics is stagecraft.

Pretending to hit your opponent in the head with a metal folding chair with all your might is good theatre. Actually hitting them hard enough in the head to cause injury is bad for "business as usual."

Knocking out your "opponent" means the next guy you have to fight may be much tougher, stronger, and more competent than your current "sparing buddy".

Spending all of one's time engaged in trivial pursuits, and tit for tat bickering, allows one to avoid the nasty aspects of administration and responsibility.

All the world's a stage!

This for sure belongs here in stable genius Trump thread :D

NYT
Trump’s Anti-Immigrant Racism an American Tradition

The nation’s first naturalization law, from 1790, closed off United States citizenship to all but “free white persons of good character.”

People of African descent were among the first migrants singled out for surveillance and exclusion, as they sought entry to the country or moved between states. State repression of black migrants transformed them into America’s first “illegal immigrants,” laying the groundwork for durable associations between law, morality and the need to keep people of color, quite literally, in their “place.”

"noddy", Australia, was, STILL IS, a whole lot worst than our beloved U.S. of A.

Can Trump’s America reverse
worldwide disapproval ?

A recent Gallup poll shows that worldwide approval of China’s global leadership role has surpassed the same rating for the US.

The difference, while small, suggests a trend that the two great powers are heading in opposite directions in terms of global approval. China is moving up and the US down.

That the US’ approval rating is down can be directly attributed to President Trump’s ‘America first’ — and to hell with everybody else —approach.

It’s no surprise that neighbouring Canada and Mexico, which perhaps know the country best, show the biggest slides in approval of the US.

SM, long time no talk :)

Why would the US want to reverse Canadian or Mexican dis-approval of US?

If they find US to be deplorable enough....
A. They'll stop trying escape their superior cultures to come here.
B. They might each build a border wall for the good of their own country! Do it for the children! :P

When Trump hired you to post anti-US propaganda on the internet, that was the mark of..... a stable genius! :P

In fact, I think the NYT and most of the MSM are doing Trump's bidding without even getting paid!

Keep scaring the illegals in the US to flee into Canada! That's good work, Az! :D

Exactly On the one hand you have Mexico where they man the border with crazy violent psychopaths to keep out illegal aliens.

Then to the north you have a country so racist they put up signs at all their international points of entry stating they ban entry of certain Americans from enter their. Particularly residents of CA

Even their chosen name reeks of racism to the point that the people there should hang their heads in shame.

Oh CA-Nada !!

Yet AZ prefers racist CA-Nada over diverse, tolerant, and democratic Iran.

Gallup poll
World's Approval
of U.S. Leadership Drops to New Low

Issue not Canada or Mexico, issue WORLD's approval .. that weakens US presidents hands worldwide .. what has Trump now to say in Davos when world does not accept his leadership, how can Trump gather "coalitions" in UN or in Europe or worldwide for anything US advocates.

Trump’s Tariffs
Will Not Bring Back Manufacturing Jobs

The move will most likely raise the price of solar panels and washing machines in coming years and yet may not even lead to many more jobs. That outcome might sound paradoxical, but analysts say it’s due to changes underway in both industries well before Mr. Trump took office.

Tariffs will not be high enough to create new manufacturing jobs because the cost of production in countries like Malaysia and South Korea will remain significantly lower than in the United States. Also, American factories would probably be highly automated and require far fewer workers. Meanwhile, the higher tariffs — and thus higher prices — for solar cells and panels will reduce demand from residential customers, businesses and utilities. That will hurt American businesses that install panels and produce equipment used in solar systems. The Solar Energy Industries Association estimates that the tariffs could cost that industry 23,000 jobs.

Whirlpool, which sells more washing machines in the United States than any other company, says that the Trump administration’s decision, which will apply tariffs to imports from most countries, will lead to the creation of 200 jobs at a factory in Ohio, in anticipation of increased sales. But foreign appliance manufacturers like Samsung and LG have already built or are building factories for washing machines in the United States. So any advantage Whirlpool might enjoy could fade away as a new Samsung factory in South Carolina and an LG factory under construction in Tennessee begin churning out machines, creating more competition.

Hmmmm .. a bit weird US wanting to compete in Washing-machine with Malaysia, at the same time blocking 200 Boing airliners selling to Iran when Chinese made planes just around the corner.
