I was going to let him find that out the hard way. We won't even get into record homelessness out there. Yet.

You can criticize Gov. Moonbeam for a lot of things, a lot of it downright loopy. You cannot, however, say he hates his state. And he's been preaching from the rooftops that things have to change or else, and the California legislature/initiative loonies keep pushing the whole thing over the cliff.

I wouldn't bet against California, Nap. If you want to run scenarios, you may as well stress test every other state in the Union. I think you'll find the prospects for conservative-dominated states to be grim. Look at what a downturn in oil prices did to North Dakota. Nevada was crushed by the housing crisis and is now desperately trying to ween itself off of casino revenue (which at some point will mean creating a state income tax).
California has enormous advantages over the aforementioned red states. Part of it is the unfair and unearned blessing of its geography (most beautiful state in the nation) but it would be foolish to ignore its welcoming culture and the powerful network effects of its liberal-dominated knowledge industries.
Wherever something like California begins to exist -- Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Texas -- an inexorable leftward shift accompanies and accelerates it.

I wonder how much gov't spending Kansas cut along with the taxes....
but to throw in bad state economies, has anyone looked at Connecticut lately? Our Gov. is killing us- and he's this strange obsession with making our road system the best in the nation.*
He's turning the state into a bedroom town for Mass. and NY.
*if this were even remotely true, small sections of roadway wouldn't be budgeted as 30, 40 and even 50 year projects. One stretch of the highway, 3 exits; approx 3 miles apart, actually is scheduled to be finished 50 years from now. I've seen it first hand, the crew just sits there on most days....

Almost. Zack Morris idolizes rich white liberals that dwell in city apartments, which is the smallest voting bloc in the US. They are capable of doing zero on their own, politically.
No mention ever of poor uneducated blacks and hispanics without which his apartment dwellers wouldn't even have a party. It's almost as if they don't exist.

It's not about rooting against California; it's that we've probably hit peak Californication both culturally and economically.Zack Morris wrote:I wouldn't bet against California, Nap. And no, Silicon Valley is not impressive (nor are the academic institutes- we have better ones out east) anymore. It's on borrowed time.

Borrowed time? Like Wall Street? Or maybe Houston? SV isn't going anywhere. And neither are those other hubs. Tech has always existed outside of California, and I fully expect that SV will gradually become less important. But California has weathered multiple boom and bust cycles. It's to the US what the US is to the world.
The country is entering a liberal super cycle. Only liberal cities are growing. That's where the jobs are. No great city has reverted to conservatism.

We've got 45% of the national population identifying as Democratic or leaning Democratic. You've only got 42%. Your "deep bench" of future leadership includes pro-choice pro-amnesty Hispanics. We aren't going anywhere We've already won. Just a mop up operation now.Mr. Perfect wrote:Says the party of Bernie Sanders (S) Vt. Good stuff. Are you trying convince me or yourself. P.S. Thanks for pumping out all those liberal babies! It's a messy job reveling in diaper-changing, dealing with teenage angst, and bankrupting yourself paying for swimming lessons and underwater basket-weaving degrees, but someone's gotta do it!

San Francisco is the most progressive city in the US. Ru by progresses for decades. Who knows? Maybe if they elect Kim Jung Un as the dear leader and it would be an improvement.Heracleum Persicum wrote:Doc wrote:So if you get your way we will soon all be living in a worker's paradise Yeah RightZack Morris wrote:We've got 45% of the national population identifying as Democratic or leaning Democratic. Aside from various ideological biases, the data for the GDP of each US state is readily available:
List of U.S. states by GDP
California ranks #1 with a GDP of more than twice the 2nd ranked state.

Right. California has been an economic powerhouse for a long time now. I'm not sure if it still applies, but at one point, as a separate country, it would've ranked 6th in GDP worldwide.Typhoon wrote:Aside from various ideological biases, the data for the GDP of each US state is readily available:

All the more reason that California's economic problems any future uncertainties are more worrisome and concerning than a downturn in oil for North Dakota or why the tax scheme in Kansas didn't work quite as well as it did in North Carolina.

Independents skew GOP and Democrats are more likely to cross the aisle in the voting booth than Republicans. Been going on since the 60's. Thanks for not knowing about it and thanks for the supermajorities.Zack Morris wrote: We've got 45% of the national population identifying as Democratic or leaning Democratic. You've only got 42%.

No problem. And a future thank you to all the millenials who will join the GOP once they get jobs, buy houses, get married, and have kids as has always happened before and will always happen in the future.P.S. Not clear to me that this assertion by HP is correct. His link is to a bunch of images.Doc wrote:So how is it that San Francisco has more homeless than Mumbai?Typhoon wrote:Aside from various ideological biases, the data for the GDP of each US state is readily available:

Homelessness is only one aspect of poverty. Some perspective:
54% of Mumbai lives in slums: World Bank
As a purely practical matter, if one were homeless in the US, then it would be better to be so in a place where one was not at risk of freezing to death.
My guess is that is why I recall a disproportionate number of homeless people in San Diego.

How ? ? ?
Poverty level begins with $ 100,000 income, you sleeping on the street below $ 80,000
$250K Per Year Salary Qualify For Subsidized Housing
Tech worker making less than $100K a yr takes Bus in the night to sleep over night.
