This Isn’t the Foreign Policy Trump Campaigned On

It may be too early to tell for sure, but Donald Trump is looking more and more like a phony. He’s also looking like a weakling. And a political ingrate.

The strategy failed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
It will fail in Syria, too.

By now the U.S. foreign-policy elite should understand that regime change is a bad idea.

The three most recent cases—Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya—are far from models of success. Afghanistan is now America’s longest-running war with no end in sight. Iraq is a close second and yet another example of the folly of trying to impose Western-style democracy in a tribal society with a Sunni-Shia divide. Moreover, deposing Saddam Hussein created a vacuum that first gave rise to al Qaeda in Iraq and then ISIS. Libya has turned out to be a smaller-scale version of Iraq. Another dictator deposed, but even President Obama had to admit regime change “didn’t work.”

Which brings us to Syria, an ongoing military mission that is still a work in progress. Clearly, the Obama administration—via a combination of arming anti-Assad rebel factions and air strikes—was unable to topple the regime in Damascus. One view amongst the foreign-policy elite is that we must work with local partners in Syria but “we must choose the right partners.” Exactly who those right partners are is not entirely clear and our track record picking the right partners in Afghanistan and Iraq gives rational thinkers cause for pause. Indeed, there may not be any right partners and it is incredulous to think that it’s possible to create them, as some have suggested.

The problem with regime change is not whether we can use military force to topple a regime. We certainly did that in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya—in different ways and at varying costs. But regime change is not about just getting rid of a regime. It’s about replacing it with a new government crafted in our image.

All about America is "short term" .. quarterly report, weekly unemployment #s .. for building a nation you need many centuries, probably 500-1000 yrs.

America has neither knowledge, neither understands, nor willing or interested to, in all those different parts of the world with entirely different civilization and culture and values.

U.S. Relationship With Russia at Risk

A spokesman for the Russian military, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, issued a statement calling the military effectiveness of the American airstrikes “extremely low,” asserting that just 23 of the 59 missiles hit their targets.

Hillary and Bill made
Russia great again.

  .. True

Hillary’s much-mocked “Russian reset” established the tone for the Clintons’ coziness with the Kremlin. On March 6, 2009, during a trip to Geneva, she presented Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov a small, red button. Hillary thought it was emblazoned with the Russian word for “reset.” Her team mistranslated and the button actually read “overload.” Nonetheless, Clinton and Lavrov jointly pressed the symbolic button. And a new era in U.S.–Russian relations erupted. While visiting Moscow on March 24, 2010, Hillary explained the Reset’s purpose:
“Our goal is to help strengthen Russia.”

Did Trump have clear authority under international law to attack Syria ?

No.

The United Nations Charter, a treaty the United States has ratified, recognizes two justifications for using force on another country’s soil without its consent : the permission of the Security Council or a self-defense claim.

In the case of Syria, the United Nations did not approve the strike, and the Defense Department justified it as “intended to deter the regime from using chemical weapons again,” which is not self-defense.

He had no authority under US law either. Bush got away with it, but Trump does not have as many friends in Congress.

How can an "ex-Fox News analyst" (Ms McFarland) be America "deputy national security adviser" ? ? ? zero qualification for that position.

This a Banana Republic ? .. ridiculous
Ms McFarland, an ex-Fox News analyst, has been offered the role of ambassador to Singapore instead

Gorsuch to be sworn in to Supreme Court today in two ceremonies

A big mistake

Supreme court judges, as they can change the direction a nation takes in the future, influencing society and culture, should not be elected with simple majority (51%) .. 2/3 majority should be needed

51% would mean 49% are against it .. that will lead to conflicts in the future .. and that is what happening in America now

SCOTUS hearings are supposed to be about competency But they have been all about politics for a long time now. Gorsush is probably the highest qualified judge under the former standard in decades. The Democrats got no traction in stopping his nomination and I am sure they saw it as a mistake not to let Gorsuch pass confirmation then go after the next three or four Trump nominees. But this is what their delusional base wanted.

Issue is not the "qualification" .. issue is whether on the "same page" with VAST MAJORITY of American people .. 51% vote means 49% are not on the same page, maybe even not reading same book .. it means 51% forcing their will on the other 49%.

Supreme court must mirror the "vast majority" of society, as it would define direction, culture & civilization, a nation takes

Therefore supreme court judges must be elected with 2/3 of majority.

Otherwise it would lead to a split society as things would move in directions which a big part of society does not want

Point was not "somehow" make Gorsush a supreme court judge .. Point should have been the new Supreme court judge should be acceptable to "vast majority" of American Joe .. obviously Gorsush is not.

Joe, it ain't lookin good :)

no point in trying to make this about trump, 49/51 splits have been the truth of much of the west for quite some time.

its meant to be a feature that gets things done and avoids situations like Italy where they stay in permanent squabbling gridlock.

some of us prefer permanent squabbling gridlock but alas, we are a minority.

HP,

News flash! I hope you are sitting down.

SCOTUS judges are not elected by the American people. :o

Claiming the 51% of congress represents 51% of Americans, or that 2/3 of Congress represents 2/3 of Americans is like claiming "Community Leaders" represent a community, SJW's represent society, or that "Activists" are really speaking for someone other than themselves.

In other news, the glass ceiling is working just fine.....

agreed, permanent squabbling gridlock is like a domestic dispute at your neighbor's house. as long as they keep it among themselves, the neighborhood is happy.

My wife tells of how when she was young, her father would yell at her sister, and her mother would run around closing the windows so the neighbors would not have to hear it. we need an app for sound proof windows....

Now... as long as you "minority" members never hit more than 49% of the population, "we, the (sensible) people" can just ignore you........ ;)

sorry dude, I didn't make the rules...... :)

A groundbreaking black jurist who became the first Muslim woman to serve as a US judge has been found dead in New York’s Hudson river.

The body of Sheila Abdus-Salaam, a 65-year-old associate judge of New York’s highest court, was found floating off Harlem about 1.45pm local time, a police spokesman said.

Police pulled Abdus-Salaam’s fully clothed body from the water and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers said her body showed no obvious signs of trauma and they declined to speculate on the cause of her death.

Is Salaam a common Sunni/Shia name? It's a greeting, yes?

I wonder if the late judge is Noi. Islam demands children's names include the father. Salaam makes me suspect a pseudo-Islamic sect like Noi.

To me, the beauty of this story, is in it's projective value. HP, recall our discussion on the MSM and the political establishment using fear to steer the herd. That pales in comparison to the herd members using fear to steer themselves.

Human body found floating in river. yawn.
Location, irrelevant.
Male or female, irrelevant.
Black, white or cinnamon, irrelevant.
White or blue collar, irrelevant.
Religion, irrelevant.
Occupation, irrelevant.
Immigration status, irrelevant.
Signs of foul play, none.

My guy ain't current POTUS. Aha! Big statement on "society." The world is black and white, it's all inkblots!

Why did I vote for Trump ?

2B honest, so far all going as I expected .. IMVVHO in many respect he much better than the alternative, Hillary .. incomparable better.

Did he say anything (bad) about Iran ? NO .. in contrary (in many occasions)

Did he do something dramatic re Israel ? NO .. in fact Hillary was much more in bed with Zionist than Trump.

Has he killed many civilians ? Not yet .. the cruise missiles hit off

So far I like Trump .. he brings new ideas, not corrupt, brings some self-confidence to Joe.

America not run by president .. there is a big "back-office" running the ship, important is to have the right key people, he getting there bit by bit, jettisoning the rubbish he needed to get the vote .. in a yr all will be smooth sailin

Clintons were corrupt, Obama was social worker, Bush were "failed" left overs from cold war .. Issues ahead for America are economic, business, that is where the future wars (for markets) going to be fought and for that America needed a "team" that understands the challenges and is "clean" .. Hillary and all the other choices neither understood nor had the ability to put America on the new path, nor "clean" (financed by Billionaire Las Vegas Pims or WS vulture funds or vicious pure play Zionists).

Rebekah Mercer
Joins Board of Anti-Muslim Think Tank

Gatestone has served as a reliable source of anti-Muslim immigration hysteria. The Intercept’s Lee Fang catalogued some of Gatestone’s more outlandish claims in an article published in February in which he profiled the group’s president, Sears’ heiress Nina Rosenwald. Fang wrote:

Gatestone Institute produces a regular drumbeat of articles and punditry. The institute claimed that the Obama administration refugee policy “exposes Americans to the jihad.” Muslim refugees in Western countries are depicted in Gatestone Institute posts as rapists and hosts of “highly infectious diseases” that threaten the health of the German people.

Fang detailed how Gatestone senior fellow Salim Mansur attacked Barack Obama for “coddling Muslims” and praised Trump’s campaign pledge to ban Muslim immigrants. Another blogger, Nonie Darwish, wrote, “citizens from Islamic nations” should be allowed into the U.S. “only when the war on Islamic terrorism is won and when Islamic governments prove to the world that they have fundamentally changed.”

Where is Doc, he knowledgable everything anti Muslim .. Doc, you have the mike, what's this Rebekah stuff about .. and, why she adapts a Jewish name and at the same time corrupts the name ? what's cookin ?

I am interpreting the short hand version of your answer to be no, you do not regret voting for Trump.

As you said elsewhere "Zack Morris, don't waste your time, it's smoooooth sailin"

Candidate for change gains office and continues the policies of the predecessor they despised (all the while, still claiming they really are different, and things really are better now that they are in office) is the most re-run movie in American politics. Careful HP, noting that Trump is Obama's third term, is similar to noting that Obama was W's third and fourth terms. Trump is W's fifth term? Only a big deal for the "POTUS is a deity" true believers.

Cuing Mr. P and the "T-word."

HP, my prescription for you has not changed, unplug from the internet, break the shackles of group identity slavery, and rent a car. You'll be happier. Reality is better than all the internet malcontents and MSM talking heads will ever tell you.

Luckily, they have little use for reality and don't live here.
