The BBC's Anna Holligan: "Lawyers representing the soldiers say they did try to protect the refugees"

A Dutch court has ruled that the Netherlands is liable over the killings of more than 300 Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) men and boys at Srebrenica in Bosnia-Hercegovina in July 1995.

The men and boys were among 5,000 Bosniaks, mostly women and children, sheltering with Dutch UN peacekeepers.

But the Dutch state was cleared over the deaths of more than 7,000 other men killed in and around Srebrenica.

The Srebrenica massacre is considered Europe's worst since World War Two.
Compensation

The case was launched by relatives of the victims under the name "Mothers of Srebrenica".

This was a bittersweet judgement for the "Mothers of Srebrenica".

Three of the women came to court bearing the hopes of thousands of survivors on their shoulders. They sat united on the front bench in a dignified silence, as the cameramen jostled to capture their reactions.

The verdict means the mothers, wives and children of more than 300 Bosniaks who were deported from the Dutch-administered compound in Potocari on 13 of July 1995 will be entitled to compensation. But the Mothers of Srebrenica's relatives were not among that group.

For them, it was never about the money. As their lawyer put it, 'How do you put a price on life?'

For the "Mothers of Srebrenica" the verdict failed to deliver the justice and accountability they have dedicated their lives to pursuing.

The Hague district court said that Dutch peacekeeping forces, Dutchbat, did not do enough to protect more than 300 of the Bosniaks and should have been aware of the potential for genocide to be committed.

It said the state should have known they would be killed by Bosnian Serbs when they handed them over from the UN compound of Potocari.

"It can be said with sufficient certainty that, had Dutchbat allowed them to stay at the compound, these men would have remained alive. By co-operating in the deportation of these men, Dutchbat acted unlawfully," the court added.

It said that the Dutch state must accept some degree of responsibility for what happened and pay compensation to the families of more than 300 victims.

But the court stopped short of holding the Netherlands liable for the fate of the majority of men killed in Srebrenica, saying that many of the male refugees at the time had not fled to the UN compound but "fled to the woods in the vicinity of Srebrenica".

The BBC's Anna Holligan, in the courtroom, says it was a hugely significant ruling but a heart-breaking verdict for the women because the Dutch state was only found partly responsible for the deaths of more than 300 of more than 7,000 men killed.

I agree with the verdict. But people forget the biggest player guilty of what happened: France. Because the Serbs held French soldiers hostage at the time, the French refused to give the air support that was promised to the Dutch to keep the Serbs at bay. The then UN chief.. I forgot his name, was a powerless non-figure without charisma unable to put the French straight and back with their noses into what they signed for and promised.

Totally under-armed and unable to fight the Milosevic gang, the Dutch resorted to a typical national reaction also known under Nazi occupation: the idea that it is better be co-operative... just "to prevent worse". The idea that they could have decided to at least resist passively and in solidarity with those 7000 civilians did not enter their minds. Like chicken sh*t cowards they just helped the Serbs to separate the men and women and get them on their buses that would drive them to their graves. And they never got our official apologies for this cowardly behavior. Our government resigned over it.. but that was just serving their own conscience and meant to whitewash their public image, it did not help any of the survivors and relatives.

More so the French deserve blame however. They got away with it.

They also scoffed at US intel support before they surrendered as I recall. The EU Militaries were rather stunned by how far they have fallen behind the US technologically as well WRT intel and drones.

Dutch Military Retreats Before... Tweets!

by Timon Dias
October 5, 2014 at 5:00 am

http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/4760/ ... ry-uniform

By ordering Dutch soldiers to be "invisible" in The Netherlands, what message is the government sending to it enemies, let alone its own citizens?

Jihadists now know that a few tweets from a single Dutch jihadist can fundamentally alter Dutch defense policy. It will order the personnel tasked with keeping The Netherlands safe to hide.

A country that has to hide its soldiers on its own soil and protect its Jewish schools with Military Police cannot possibly maintain that it has no real problems with elements of its Muslim minority.
The Dutch Ministry of Defense has advised its soldiers not wear their uniforms in public. Dutch vice Prime Minister Lodewijk Asscher of the Labour Party emphasized that the proposal was merely advice.

The Dutch military, however, clearly ordered -- instead of advised -- its personnel to hide their military professions in public.

Dutch customs officials, whose uniforms could be mistaken as military, received the same advice.

The reason for this display of woefully misplaced 'conscientiousness' was a series of threats by the Dutch jihadist known as Muhajiri Shaam, a member of the al-Qaeda-affiliated group Jahbat-al Nusra.

Shaam tweeted: "So, now Dutch F-16's. Dutch people: your government just made you a target".

In a more elaborate threat, Shaam stated: "The West offered more than 90 million lives during the first and second World War for their self-glorified democracy. So the Ummah must be prepared to sacrifice even more lives for a righteous State which rules under the laws of Allah. The world has suffered the oppressive darkness of Western capitalism for long enough. It's time they get a taste of divine justice."

Threats tweeted by the jihadist known as Muhajiri Shaam, pictured above, have caused the Dutch military to order its soldiers not to wear uniforms in public.

Shaam's warnings followed in the wake of Dutch support for the military campaign against the new so-called "Islamic State" [IS].

The Dutch government last week pledged six F-16 fighter jets, two spare F-16's, and a maximum of 130 military advisors to train forces opposing IS.

These threats are being taken very seriously. The Dutch government fears attacks on its military personnel; more specific threats against Dutch soldiers have now been voiced by Dutch jihadists. This is not the first time Dutch soldiers have been ordered to become unrecognizable as members of the military. The same order was issued during the beginning of the Iraq war in 2003 and during the release of Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders' movie Fitna.

By ordering Dutch soldiers to become "invisible" in The Netherlands, what message is the government sending to its enemies, let alone its own citizens? Dutch-Iranian law professor Afshin Ellian rightfully asks: if Dutch soldiers aren't safe anymore, than who is? Jihadists now know that a few tweets from a single Dutch jihadist can fundamentally alter Dutch defense policy. Dutch citizens now know that a few tweets from a single Dutch jihadist will send shivers down their government's spine and that -- instead of making sure all threats are neutralized -- it will order the personnel tasked with keeping them safe, to hide.

The Dutch-Israeli psychotherapist and author Martin van Vliet voices his concern: "Are we supposed to be protected by a military that orders its soldiers to start wearing the invisibility cloak as soon as they find out combating Jihad is not a video game without risks? The Dutch would be right not to place their trust in their military."

Such an operational transformation -- due to a tweet -- can only embolden Islamists to become more audacious and violent. At the same time, it can also prompt Dutch citizens to take more drastic measures to secure their own safety. Although the government was likely trying to deescalate the situation and safeguard its military personnel, its action can only work as a catalyst for further social unrest, inter-cultural tensions and overall escalation.

Fortunately, some soldiers are refusing the order. Lieutenant Colonel Willem Schoonebeek, for instance, stated: "I will not be led by the dictatorship of a loud minority. This uniform represents the organization that our Defense Department is. We provide safety in The Netherlands and beyond. It would be strange to participate in a mission in Iraq, while being too scared to advertise your profession in The Netherlands."

In parallel to Dutch soldiers "disappearing" from the street scene, Amsterdam's Jewish schools now have to be protected by the Royal Military Police [RMP] at the request of the City Council, the Justice Department and the police. As the RMP is a police unit, it is still allowed to be recognizable as such.

A country that has to hide its soldiers on its own soil and protect its Jewish schools with Military Police cannot possibly maintain that its social cohesion is intact and that it has no real problems with elements of its Muslim minority. Sadly, just like the punch-line that "IS has nothing to do with Islam," most top government officials and politicians are still in full blown denial about the scale and deep seriousness of this social and cultural problem

King’s speech to parliament heralds end of Dutch welfare state

(...)

“Due to social developments such as globalisation and an ageing population, our labour market and public services are no longer suited to the demands of the times,” the king said, in a speech written by the Liberal prime minister, Mark Rutte, and his cabinet.

“The classical welfare state is slowly but surely evolving into a ‘participatory society’,” he continued – one, that is, where citizens will be expected to take care of themselves, or create civil-society solutions for problems such as retiree welfare.

(...)

This means that welfare must be an obligation for family, friends or neighbours, not for the state. Most extraordinary! I hope the Dutch will give their opinion on this idiocy at the next general elections.

itsit means the dutchies can close shop on supporting all the non integrating muslims and keep it in the family for a bit until they all piss off home.

once it changes to a participatory civil welfare you better have friends and family and show up to the events and integrate or its going to get ugly.

A community is a lot more than just family, friends and neighbours. If one eliminates the wider community's obligations, one could as well go back to tribal life...

Woman fired for being a prostitute by Dutch central bank
Wed, Apr 15, 2015, 01:00
http://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/eu ... -1.2175923

Just when it seemed the image of bankers couldn’t get any more battered or bizarre, the Dutch central bank has fired a 46-year-old female employee claimed to have been working after hours as a highly paid prostitute – specialising in sadomasochism.

The woman, who had been with the central bank for eight years and had allegedly worked previously with both ABN-AMRO and ING Bank, had allegedly been offering her services under the name “Conchita van der Waal”, advertising under the motto: “the kinkier the better”.

Ms van der Waal also offered to engage in sexual role play, according to the Dutch-language business magazine, Quote, which said one of the roles in which she was photographed online was that of an SS commandant.

Although her real name and the exact nature of her former job remain unclear, it’s understood she had a “supervisory” role at the bank.

In response to the magazine’s revelations, the central bank confirmed it had received a tip-off about the employee’s double life, had investigated the circumstances, and that she had been fired at the end of last year because of “integrity issues”.

The bank said all candidates had to undergo strict screening when they applied for jobs. Of 5,469 prospective employees who had been screened since 2011, 614 had been rejected. The bank said those screening procedures were now being reviewed.

From a work point of view, there seems little doubt that Ms van der Waal contravened the central bank’s code of conduct, which forbids “indecent behaviour” – and stipulates that no employee should act in a way which could harm the reputation of the bank or lead to negative publicity.

More broadly, prostitution is legal in the Netherlands, so she is in the clear from that point of view. However, sex workers are expected to register with their local chamber of commerce, have a VAT number, and pay income tax, none of which Ms van der Waal appears to have done – leaving herself open to possible legal action for back taxes.

Unfortunately for Ms van der Waal, she appears to have set out her charges, starting at €450 an hour and including her rate for a “wonderful weekend”, on her personal website – though the site appeared to be experiencing some difficulties last night.

She may also face difficulties because her “S&M studio” on the outskirts of Amsterdam appears to be in a building in which “immoral” behaviour is specifically outlawed under the terms of the contract under which it was bought in 2012 – allegedly by Ms van der Waal’s husband.
Comment by Zero-Hedge:
In retrospect few will be surprised by any of the above: after all for the past 8 years, central bankers have been fornicating with the general population on a far more massive scale than what Conchita did, and they didn't even have to paid for it: they just printed the money.

In fact, some may say this particular central banking hooker acted with far more integrity than all of her colleagues: at least every sexual activity was consensual, not the forced and involuntary variety that her business suit-dressed peers perform on the broader population every single day.

I would steer clear of her. Sex worker/bankers sometimes charge a hefty fine for early withdrawal.
