Thank You VERY Much for your post and the Travel Advisory Warning, Esteemed Typhoon..........

Adding this to list with gum chewing and graffiti in Singapore......

Is there anything else that travelers to Thailand should avoid doing that is not covered by common sense.....

See? I once railed against the inappropriate behavior of Aussie youth, under the influence, towards unescorted girl wombats. And this is the thanks I get?

Meanwhile, back in the Kingdom, there is indeed an odd smell (and it ain't jasmine) coming from a certain Soi off Sukumvet. But don't hold your breath.

Khun Jatuporn, a gutsy guy if there ever was one, has indicated that he will wear only sneakers (no socks) to his forthcoming lockup. I recommend lose them shoelaces, too.

Prosecutors say Mr Jatuporn's recent comments, aired on UDD-sponsored Peace TV and on YouTube clips, insulted the authorities.

After the ruling, officials from the Department of Corrections immediately took Mr Jatuporn to Bangkok Remand Prison. Mr Jatuporn had been spotted carrying a bag of his personal belongings upon his arrival at the court. He told reporters he had packed the bag in case he was jailed.

"I am also taking with me my sports shoes, but there are no socks definitely," he said, referring to the fate of land fraud suspect Thawatchai Anukul, who was found hanged by a pair of socks at Department of Special Investigation headquarters last month. His family suspects foul play.

A couple of hours ago the Crown Prince, Sia O, got the promotion he has been fishing for. Now, word on the street has it that Air Chief Marshal Foo Foo has been elevated to the rank of Crown Prince Foo Foo. Thais are now in mourning, but maybe not for the obvious reasons.

What exactly is going on in Thailand? The old Spengler board on Asia Times had to avoid getting caught up in politics so Thailand could not be discussed.

I assume this board is hosted in a more neutral locale, so a general overview would be helpful.

Jimbo: your innuendo is going way over my head.

Yes, the Thai king passed away; he was on life support for an extended time. And it's true that reporting on Royal Family matters there is restricted. Here's the brief outline of his life as prepared by AFP and published by a Singaporean source.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asi ... 03834.html

It's interesting to note that a Thai newspaper - The Nation - used this AFP item, but excised the time-line items between the military coup that ousted PM Thaksin and the military coup that removed PM Yingluck.

There's a treasure trove of internet stuff on the Crown Prince. Here are a couple of examples. The first features a former consort and Air Chief Marshal Foo Foo. The second includes a later consort and a later version of Foo Foo.

God bless you, Ansuchin. I worried over your absence here. Typhoon remarked upon it more than once.

Some commentary - not so bad . . .

"Thailand's tears"

Will the generals ever decide that their role in Thai society is not to enrich themselves and those elitists who support them, but to protect the nation?

Please keep posting. No reliable international news gets to the US.

Other posters, this is true for your country too. Whatever the news in your country, we get a superficial smattering at best.

My condolences to you and your fellow Thais.

The only good news to come out of Thailand is that we know that you're alive and, I trust, well.

"I truly believe that Thailand is entering a Dark Age." And Christine Gray (the author) tells us why. Convincing.

"Deep Questions Surround Thai Succession"
http://www.asiasentinel.com/politics/de ... uccession/

Lots of informative articles on current Thai matters are out there. This one is a bit different, as it doesn't pretend to know probable outcomes.

What we do know is that Thai (which means "free") people are being repressed and controlled by the military junta, with no prospects for freedom of assembly, speech, etc.

The Crown Prince seems self centered, but how could expect anything else?

Martial law is always bad. Democracy is not a real option. Oligarchy is a permanent dead end.

I do not know Thailand, but my uninformed opinion is to not change the monarchy until a superior governance is established.

Yes, NH, things aren't well in the Kingdom. But the question isn't to change the monarchy or not. It is to give the people, rather than the generals, influence over the monarchy. As it is, the generals call the shots. Like his predecessors, the Crown Prince will get by with more than a little help from his totalitarian military friends. An analysis -

Journalists fear speech crackdown
http://www.cjr.org/the_feature/thai_kin ... ckdown.php

BBC Thailand correspondent Jonathan Head ". . . was summoned by a government spokesman who informed him that the tone of his coverage had been offensive because he had not expressed sufficiently strong emotions on air."

Kinda reminds you of the people punished in North Korea for not displaying enough sorrow over the death of their Dear Leader, Kim Jong-il, doesn't it?
