Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

IIRC one of the last times a Pope resigned, the next one, Boniface the Perp who Persuaded the Pope to Pass, was a BAD one...... Dante put the Pope who resigned in the outermost circle of the Inferno with the indecisive.......... And put Boniface VIII deeper in Hell with the Simonists.......

I would think that having a living ex pope there to stand by the election of either another conservative Pope (too much for the liberal Italians to bear) or a non European Pope which would be destructive to the church in Europe as an institution (what's left of it) but also the possibility of a conservative non European which would possibly provide the possibility of the election of an anti-pope by a subset of liberal cardinals. Let's see if the current pope lives long enough to withstand the election.

Yeah the prophecy stuff is interesting but not as interesting as the reality of what this means for the future of the church.

Going by memory, I recall the reigning pope having passed away before a new one was elected.

The "liberal" cardinals and bishops tend to be of the Modernist variety, and Modernists don't like to upset the applecart. It's the secret and impenetrable meanings and symbols that the applecart conveys that is important to them.

The rest, like his Eminence Cardinal Mahoney, are pretty out there; and dare I say, too heretical to make a dent in the institute.

As for anti-popes in general, that's not how things roll nowadays. Post-Reformation you threaten outright schism. And the Church has seen several in that time period- always small but deeply divided; and if there were a break today it would come in Austria.

This is the first abdication in 598 years. Gregory XII resigned to help end the Western Schism. Of course, behind the scenes at that Council of Constance, he had a huge influence on picking his successor. He was then given a bishopric of his own and died only 2 years after his abdication.

No, it is not in Benedict's temperament to abdicate for any other reason than he is not physically or mentally able to do it. He's been looking to resign for the past 20 years- having twice handed in a resignation letter to the previous Pontiff. His brother, who is a bit older than him, has gone deaf and blind and I have a hunch that either the same thing is happening to him or he expects its onset very soon. Consider this as well,
