Meteorite risk | Space rock to pass near Earth . . .

Post by monster_gardener »

On the Radio this morning..........

100 foot Space Rock passing near Earth........

Not supposed to hit Earth itself..........

Not a Dinosaur Killer.........

But could take out some telecommunications satellites as it passes by............

If it did affect some bottom lines, maybe there would be more interest in making sure it doesn't happen again......

On Friday, Feb. 15, the Earth is going to get a very close shave by an asteroid*. Called 2012 DA14, this 50 meter (160 foot) rock will pass just over 27,000 kilometers (17,000 miles) from the Earth’s surface. This is closer than our geosynchronous satellites, so this really is a close pass!

But, to be very clear: This asteroid poses no threat to us right now, nor in the foreseeable future. Friday’s miss is just that: a miss. And, in fact, this is a good thing, since any time an asteroid gets close (but misses), we learn a lot, including how to find them, how to track them, and even how to talk about them to the public.

my area apparently gets one of the best views of this going past - im trying to talk myself into waking up in the wee hours and driving out to a location away from the city lights to get some pics of it.

it is however mid summer 40c here at the moment and i will need to sacrifice the precious few hours of cool sleeping time between 3am and 6am to achieve this.

This one is also shenanigans.

Nothing to do with the meteor, rather it is the natural gas burn at Derweze: the Door to Hell

Meteorite Hits Central Russia - More than 500 injured..

Post by monster_gardener »

Thank You VERY MUCH for your post, HoosierNorm

And for the link & video...........

Just heard about it the Radio.........

Here is an English language link that loads faster than the Russia Times which I suspect is overloaded right now........

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/ ... 5Z20130215

Wonder if this was a companion to the one that was expected later today.......

Meteors often come in groups....... Meteor showers........

Or if the meteor/asteroid broke up into several..........

Last night on NPR on StarDate...........
We don’t always know about such approaches too far in advance, though. This asteroid — designated 2012 DA14 — was discovered just a year ago, even though it’s passed quite close to us many times over the past century.
http://stardate.org/radio/program/space-watch-iv

Graph of the asteroid approach........ Says it's not going to hit any satellites....... But if it has any more companions.........

http://stardate.org/astro-guide/gallery/getting-close

IMVHO we need to get serious about these Space Rocks if we don't want to go the way of the Dinosaurs......

Unlike the Dinosaurs, we have a chance to do something to stop things like this and worse.......

Could be that G_d or someone/thing else like Mean Green Mother Nature is giving us Chaos Monkeys a Science & Engineering practical Exam that we better not fail...........

Holy Sh*t !!! I was just watching the History Channel last night about meteors hitting the earth.

I wonder if this was part of 2012 DA14?

Maybe:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/16/world ... .html?_r=0
A small asteroid, known as 2012 DA14, is expected to pass close to Earth later on Friday, NASA reported on its Web site. Aleksandr Y. Dudorov, a physicist at Chelyabinsk State University, said it was possible that the meteorite may have been flying alongside the asteroid.

I love how the light caused the shadows to move like it was a time-lapse.

On the radio......

Russian Meteor - 10 tons,

Traveling up to 33,000 MPH

Pieces fell into a reservoir.......

Unrelated to the bigger on today passing by right now....

The bigger meteor/asteroid today is one of the estimated 1% of these Space Rocks we know about.........

Likely we do not know about an estimated 99%

Danger Will Robinson..... Danger........

The fireball entered Earth’s atmosphere at 18 km per second, and released hundreds of kilotons of energy, JPL said. The blast's force was the equivalent of the nuclear weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII – many times over.
The shallow angle at which the meteor crossed the sky over the city of Chelyabinsk contributed to the amount of damage, releasing energy equivalent to about 300 kilotons of TNT, according to Margaret Campbell-Brown, an astronomer and physicist at the University of Western Ontario.
In comparison the Hiroshima bomb was 16 kilotons.

Meteor Safety Public Service Announcement - Duck and Cover..

On the radio......

Some Russians injured by the Meteor saw the flash of light and rushed to windows to see what was happening where flying glass from the windows which broke a moment later injured them.....

Ironically The old Cold War "Duck and Cover" advice for nukes may have applicability to meteors also....... ;)

At least for protection from flying glass........

Update......

Unlikely that Russian Meteor is directly related to the bigger asteroid that passed by this afternoon......... Traveling in opposite directions.....

At the speed of 30km per second, the meteor which fell in Russia would have needed just over five minutes to travel from Cuba to the spot in Russia where it fell. It seems thus very unlikely that we are talking of the same meteor... But it does seem that there have been a lot of oversized meteors in the last couple of days... More to come?...

Seconded.

Agree that is NOT the same meteor....

But am bit concerned that it might be part of a shower/swarm.......

Reason Russian Dashcams captured so many meteor images..

The Real Reason Russian Dashcams captured so many meteor images..

On Fox News a night or so ago............ On Greta VanSusterin's Show.......

The reason the fireball meteor was captured on sooooooooooooooo many dashcams..........

Because there are a lot of dashcams in Russia...............

Why are there sooooooooooooooooo many dashcams in Russia..........?

Because the police in Russia, ESPECIALLY the traffic cops, are corrupt and try to shakedown motorists for bribes........... :|

And the motorists are using dashcams to discourage this..........

Better Astronomy..........

Thanks to a Bear   of a corruption problem........

Dashcams should be encouraged in America too .. Police in America not less corrupt AND lose cannon than Russia (argument could be made, in a sense worst) .. those clips showing Police beating King or using same rubber glove to check the buddyly cavities (anus and Vagina, with a single rubber glove, for the 2 ladies) of two ladies on Texas road (on excuse they hiding a joint, non was found) were not possible without Dashcams

Everybody should, for his/her own protection (from Police brutality) have Dashcams .. a cheap tool

and, Monster .. AFAIK, recording police (brutality) on patrol seems now illegal .. too many embarrassing episode for police, so, they passed a law making it illegal

now, Monster, laugh is for sure not on Russians being allowed to record police corruption, but in America outlawing it
