if you let someone shut you down so easily its not the fault of society.

i do understand peer pressure is painful but the only real issue for me is when you actually get punishment from the legal system, getting grief from some durian uni students is tedious but is a part of life.

losing your job because your manager is a weak willed durian is of course the ugly middly ground between those two situations, thats just sad but perhaps for the best.
True enough. I was merely pointing out their tactic. As you have pointed out previously, normal people have more fruitful pursuits than arguing with a professional student who is in their third year of studying Sensitivity Awareness.

If Bill or Suzy wants to claim their butt hurts because society is screwed up, I'm pretty sure they are accurately describing their view on life. My response is to decide if the input channel is open or not. High probability, they are pitching something more chic than I. They shouldn't have too much trouble finding a mirror or an audience that does not include me.

"If you fail to speak to a man who can be spoken to, you lose the man. If you speak to a man who can't be spoken to, your words mean nothing. Wise men lose neither men nor words."

Or in traditional Redneck Zen wisdom:

"Don't waste your time arguing with an durian, people watching might not be able to tell the difference."

With enough bong-water, those uni students will sprout to eventually become the legal system. :)
maybe.

shitstirring is such an integral part of our culture, im not sure its ever going to get much traction outside its current circles.

worst case, it will be one of those issues thats mostly ignored unless you annoy the wrong public figures and then the eye of sauron is turned towards you.

Nap and folks,

Interesting points. The simple answer is that neither my wife nor I have ever seen such graffiti 'in the flesh' in this country, despite being well travelled in inner city neighbourhoods.

However, the said graffiti was seen in a small country town, well out of the way, so I suspect somewhat behind the multicultural times. It is in such towns and villages that we see the occasional (thankfully) nationalist flags. In our own neighbourhood the owner of large house has a garden flagpole, to which he raises flags of all nations at weekly intervals. This week it was Iran. :D So, there is a God in heaven.

nod,

Yes, as previously mentioned, political correctness is the executive branch of normative ethics.

yep, libertarians believe its dangerous in a multicultural and multireligous society with seperation of church and state to legislate one sub cultures view on politeness in the law.

socialists believe its perfectly natural that whats going on inside their heads should be enforced on every other human on the planet.

good too see you taking a stance on the nuances involved in being a socialist libertarian :P

nod,

Whilst I obviously condone politeness (my posts here are a case in point), the rule of law based on normative ethics runs deeper. The actions of the US supreme court are an example of this.

well put.

I have often noticed during extended conversations with my lifelong leftist friends that implementing their ideals of "selflessness" and "compassion" seems to require forcing their own internal definitions and standards of behavior upon others.

The conversations usually end when one of the more insensitive, wiseasses engaged says "OK, your going to need a lot of weapons to achieve that level of compassion. Are you ready and willing to use them?"

Aping one of your previous signatures "Socialism is only compassionate if everyone is forced to comply."

What to do about them outlyers......... "they" always ruin it for "us." :P

nod,

That's what normative ethics is about. A society will develop commonly accepted norms over time, the acceptance of which comes out in the practice of political correctness. However, there will always be some ethical issues which are more contentious and involve further discussion in the appropriate legislatures.

Alex,

Its part of a long term, multi-cultural, mutual enrichment program. They expose me to pseudo-intellectual, enlightened, continental, selfish selfless, thinking, and I expose them to good ole crass, low brow, in-bred, room temp IQ, American, nihilistic, thinking.

Win-win for both us & them.
Observers have a tough time telling us apart, so they say.
Oddly enough, that pisses them off more than me. Go figure.
