Most of the philosophy profs I had the pleasure of knowing had the personality I imagine to be dominant among lawyers, they just love to argue with little regard for the outcome. Lot of output bandwidth, little input bandwidth. One day, my favorite said so in almost as many words, "We, philosophy professor are just full of ourselves, and we love to argue. And if we ever start to agree with each other, most of us won't be employed any longer."
I could spend the rest of the day arguing with you on this, but I have a feeling it would be counter-productive. :D
Of course it would be counter productive, there is no common experience between us on this matter. We never sat in the same classes, nor drank beer with the same philosophy profs. ;)

But refusing to enter the arena of counter productive philosophical argument? Turn in your high brow intellectual ID card at the door on your way out Bro! ;) :P

My other applicable analogies would be drinking wine with a wine snob, or watching baseball with a baseball stat snob.

"Oh yes, the grape of this wine was obviously picked in the morning by a well rested left hander, which is much less traumatic to the vine and the grape, as opposed to a fatigued right hander picking the grape in the hotter afternoon sun."

"Fred's screw ball is unique in all of MLB because his mother was a Jewish welder."

Fun to a point, but tedious. Maybe if I was getting paid to read what they are getting paid to write....... :P

That's a lot of text to try and explain what Derrida means to a philoplebian such as I. Thank you for your effort.

Anyways, he does add anything to my understanding [and not to S. Weinberg's who, among other notable achievements, is the author of a famous text on GR.]

Empirically, one may compare the understanding of nature achieved by use of the scientific process versus the same using postmodern text deconstruction.

I'll stick with the scientific method.
Have you tried post-mortem test reconstructionism?

During my brief stint as a potential philosophy major, it became obvious that no one can correctly what any of the great philosophers actually meant. Even those with doctorate degrees in philosophy could not agree. It was great fun to watch, but not a career path that fit my personality. Not to mention I was paying them to arguing, rather than them paying me to argue.

Kinda like the eternal gig of evaluating what God really meant in religious texts.

Good work if you can get it and if it fits your personality. On the plus side, like religion, it is a science that is never settle.

Jacob Bronowski's quip in the Ascent of Man series on the history of science comes to mind.

Hegel had proved that logically only seven planets can exist in our solar system.
However, "the ink was not yet dry" on his paper when the minor planet Ceres was discovered. |
The discovery of the other planets followed.

That's a major difference between dogma and science: dogma has all the answers all the time,
whereas science always has more open questions than answers awaiting further research and discovery.

In the modern lexicon, it is called "sustainability." :P

I read the word "sustainable" applied to everything.

Have yet to figure out what it actually means.

Sustainability: The mental gymnastics that allows one to "bitterly cling" to an existing article of faith in the face of contradicting reality.

Example: Coming Ice Age disciples morph into AGW disciples who morph into Climate Change disciples. "The science is settled, my doomer porn belief du jour is the correct viewpoint. People who disagree with me, and do not practice sustainability, are Flat Earthers, Holocaust Deniers, and racists. The end is neigh, and always will be, until you people agree with us."

Having a 30 year mortgage provides one the sustainability to be flexible in one's beliefs regardless of any external events.

Freud claimed it had to do with sex. People with sustainable belief systems get laid more. Freud's theory seems simplistic now that we have social media and computer modelling.

The Spec | The Google ‘anti-diversity’ memo isn’t anything of the sort
Before I get to the reaction the memo has provoked, which I’m sure you can imagine, it’s worth noting one more thing. Damore laments the fact that it has become dangerous to challenge the progressive orthodoxy within the company. ‘When it comes to diversity and inclusion,’ he writes, ‘Google’s left bias has created a politically correct monoculture that maintains its hold by shaming dissenters into silence. This silence removes any checks against encroaching extremist and authoritarian policies.’

So how did Google react? It fired Damore for ‘perpetuating gender stereotypes’, thereby confirming his point. This was after his memo had provoked a tsunami of moral outrage across the liberal-left.
Google has also banned Prof. Jordan B. Peterson of the University of Toronto, from all Google related accounts including Youtube.

Quillette has a good article on this issue, however,
We're still experiencing server issues due to unprecedented levels of traffic. So we are putting our most recent article into email format so that you can read it.

I'm working through Peterson's Maps of Meaning course. Have not noticed anything odd other than umpteen unauthorized third parties bootlegging his videos and chopping them up into 10 min. segments.

There does seem to be some rough censorship going on generally. Some alt right type sites are now labeling themselves as business or crypto.

I would not be surprised to see yt fail under the weight of bogus videos and see the individual website/rss model make a come back.

I was reinstated after much coverage of this sort: http://j.mp/2v7c6y3 The fact I was blocked at all indicates threat to free speech.

Not clear to me. Youtube is the path of least resistance when it comes to making and distributing videos. Especially longer ones.

Not when they censor and refuse to monetize vids people like. The whole online ad paradigm is failing anyway. Fake clicks, fake followers, no reliable metrics. Back to basics.

I expect to see advertisers start their own aggregation sites soon.

Have to agree with you re the online ad paradigm. The stats don't seem to support the investment.

If most people used Adblock and all the other tracking blockers that I do, the paradigm would have already collapsed from lack of clicks.
