interesting progressive article on why sustainability is broken - peasants are stupid

i suggest we will see the terms "promethan gap" and “apocalyptic blindness” turn up as memes one day soon.

…determines a notion of time and future that renders human beings incapable of facing the possibility of a bad end to their history. The belief in progress, persistently ingrained since the Industrial Revolution, causes the incapability of humans to understand that their existence is threatened, and that this could lead to the end of their history.
I do like the cynicism at our blind faith in progress but the rest gives me shudders.

As one of my favorite professors, and perhaps the most consummate problem solver I have ever met once mused: "Late in life, I have finally come to the realization that the world was screwed up before I was born, and will continue to be screwed up long after I die. I find great comfort in that!"

The track record of supposed experts in predicting an imminent apocalypse is no better than that of biblical fundamentalists.

Probably worse.

The secular auto-flagellants have been at it since the time of Malthus. However, they do deserve top marks for being consistent.
Consistently wrong.
