The Ottoman Turkish Mehter is one of the oldest military bands in the world.
Wonderful music!
These are modernized but not much different from the Ottoman version :

Turkish Music - Ancient and Modern
Re: Turkish Music - Ancient and Modern
This year (2012) Turkey gained the 7th place (out of 26 countries) at the Eurovision music context. Azerbaijan was the host country, as it was the winner last year.

Can Bonomo represented Turkey with this song:

(Can Bonomo actually composed this music and he also wrote the words, he did not just sing the song.)

Here is a video where Can Bonomo speaks to the singer from Azerbaijan who won the 3rd place this year:

But there has been some controversy about the reason Turkish government chose Can Bonomo to represent the country at the 2012 Eurovision event. Here is a video where that director of T.R.T. (the official Turkish radio and television organization that is a branch of the government), where says (at time t=0:40 in the following video) that the reason Can Bonomo was selected by the Turkish government for this task was because since he is of Jewish ethnicity, as this would make a good impression internationally to demonstrate that Turkey is a tolerant country, and that this would therefore earn some extra points to insure a high rank at the Eurovision music contest.
Here is the government announcement (time t=0:40):

Anyway, in the end Can Bonomo turned out to be OK, and this song was liked at Eurovision.

Re: Turkish Music - Ancient and Modern
Some years ago when I was in Istanbul I scoured the record stores for music. I can't say as I'm exactly a fan, but it was interesting.
A lot of Turkish techno-pop used to feature sexy looking ladies on the covers of the albums. I wonder if they are being more discrete these days.
