Heard that he had passed. We didn't get the first rate high culture at the house, I mean we listened to Tchaikovsky but it was usually a Liberace album.

(My mother adored Liberace)
Economist | Van Cliburn obituary

Van Cliburn's performance back then was superlative.

Also, he was supported by a first rate conductor and orchestra.

The Russians still remember him with great admiration and affection.

I know very little about Liberace except that his personal style, which to someone enculturated with a "less is more" perspective, comes across as Rococo on acid.

Apocrypha: the late great Horowitz is said to have remarked that "pianists are Soviet, homosexual, or bad."

However, times have changed

Motezuma (excerpts) - Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) ; various soloists ; Il Complesso Barocco directed by Alan Curtis
tEC1C2b4w2c

From a live production at the Teatro Comunale Ferrara in 2008.

Motezuma is no typical baroque love opera but rather an historical work which depicts the destruction of a people and a culture by use of force and violence.

The contrast and the striking differences between the Aztecs and the Spanish are revealed in every detail, even in the body movements in the fighting scenes. A victim of the Spanish, Motezuma turns out to be a violent and aggressive leader himself.

The stage set makes use of deep symbolical language: the main element on stage is the cross-shaped and blood-stained platform. The use of colours and lighting is also intended to enhance the characters' complex personalities.

Have been listening to a lot of Chopin lately. My mother played much of his music and since losing her I have found a great deal of comfort in listening to the different pieces that she would play.
