New hospital architecture

Post by manolo »

Folks,

Today, my wife and I visited a brand new hospital opened by the NHS earlier this year.

It is a beautiful design, all wrapped around a large central atrium, flooded with light, and then comprising wings of single rooms and very small wards (4 people). The medical specialities are architecturally separated, preventing walkthrough and reducing infection risks. The atrium, outside spaces and gardens are all open the public and planted wisely for relaxation and views from all the patient’s rooms.

Here is a link to images of the work in progress.

The building strikes me as a development from international style with no hint of postmodernism or retro kitsch. I suppose my only complaint would be the scale of the space, with a feeling more of an airport or university rather than a local hospital, but that is just my 2p. Overall I am impressed.

What do you think?

Alex.
