Thanks to you and Typhoon for the congratulations.

It's funny that you wrote this though. The commencement speaker brought in by the university made it a point to implore the graduating class to become more politically engaged because "engineers run the world behind the scenes" and aren't public, or political enough. She went as far to say that it is more important they take jobs in Washington as lobbyists for causes then actually put their newly learned skills into practice.

What being a political activist has to do with engineering, I do not know; what I did understand, very quickly into the speeches, was why many of these people focused on engineering. Nary a soul at the podium could be accused of having a gilded tongue. ;) And as such, it's hard imagining a political coup by a bunch of overeager engineers.

Well, some diversity in politics, other than lawyers, would probably be a good thing . . .

Politicians are typically ignorant as swans when it comes to engineering - technical and scientific issues.

Hopefully, as it becomes ever more apparent that resources are not unlimited, those who understand physics will gain a larger audience relative to those who understand marketing.

that is too strange, people who are educated enough to speak at commencements, saying the same silly stuff as me, the end must be nigh..... :(

You seem to have a realistic view of the world, so teach your brother about doomer porn and fluffy language, and you will be doing him a huge favor that he can pay forward at a later date. :)

In other news, my family and I got together to celebrate my parents' 30th anniversary. We went to Disney World, which is where my parents went for their honeymoon all those years ago. This was the third year where we celebrated a milestone anniversary. Last year was spent celebrating my uncle and aunt's 50th anniversary, and the year before that we celebrated another uncle and aunt's 40th...so I am anniversaried out.

It was a semi-successful affair. I got to see my aunts and uncles, my cousins and goddaughter and do a lot of swimming (despite the rain) so it was a good time.

Wife and I celebrated our 50th in June; four cords of firewood cut, split, and stacked for winter burning in the shop; 30# of sockeye filleted, vacuum-sealed, and in the freezer; fresh veggies from the garden and greenhouse . . .

All is well in The Great Land . . .

Thanks, Nap, . . yes and no on a different world. We have virtually all the trappings of contemporary culture . . it's just that the wilderness is so close . . not much of a buffer . . lots of folks today have lost sight of just how closely our lives depend on the soil and how close the wilderness really is, even if we can't see it.

So I've received a phone call from my sister (who never calls unless there is trouble) that she is engaged. I met the gentleman once, he seemed affable but talk about snobby and arrogant. Just finished his doctorate, so I guess he is ready for the next step. He's smart- he knows he's smart- and he wants to make sure you acknowledge how smart he is. I hope he is smart enough to understand what he is getting himself into here.

More importantly important is that my sister is ecstatic, so it is some good news coming this way.

Napster, Congrats to your sister.

To keep peace in the family, keep your judgments to yourself. If she doesn't know his flaws by now, she will soon. Nothing good will come of you pointing them out before she figures it out.

Smart, snobby, arrogant, and insecure........hmmmm.... :) maybe you could talk him into becoming a OTNOT poster? ;)

Maybe he could gather here with the rest of the herd when we point our asses into the wind........

Not sure the affable part will fit in here, hopefully we can break him of that! :)

Yeah, I'm not saying anything. ;) But let me ask'ya this: have you ever played a game of Trivial Pursuit with someone who actually pulled their credentials mid-game? We sat down for Christmas dinner at my aunt's house, and he definitely chaffed a few feathers (not mine, mind you) with constantly referencing his masters in chemistry and how he was working (at the time) on his doctorate in education.

Personally, I found it kind of quirky and charming. Compared to some of her other boyfriends, he was rather modest. See- she had meet each and every one of them. This was the only one she introduced to the whole family. And some of them made this guy look humble.

My sister- she has a type- :? Hey it's not the worst type out there though. It's dorky smart guys from upper class backgrounds.

So who's complaining? ;)

I'll tell you this much- there have been a few passings recently, so it's a time of transition.
