.

A man was looking for a place to sit in a crowded university library. He asked a girl: "Do you mind if I sit beside you? The girl replied, in a loud voice "NO, I DON'T WANT TO SPEND THE NIGHT WITH YOU!"
All the people in the library started staring at the man, who was deeply embarrassed and moved to another table.
After a couple of minutes, the girl walked quietly to the man's table and said with a laugh: "I study psychology, and I know what a man is thinking; I bet you felt embarrassed, right?"
The man responded in a loud voice: "$500 FOR ONE NIGHT? ..... I`M NOT PAYING YOU THAT MUCH!"
All the people in the library looked at the girl in shock.
The man whispered to her: "I study law, and I know how to screw people".

The best part is that p = 0.05 corresponds to only 2 sigma in a normal distribution which corresponds to a rather high 1 in 22 chance of the result being due to statistically spurious random fluctuations.

Particle physicists, having been burned many times by spurious random signals due to such statistical fluctuations, won't even look at a signal until it at the 3 sigma level of significance.

A signal is only considered to be unambiguous evidence for a new particle at the 5 sigma level or better which corresponds to only a 1 in 1,744,278 chance of the result being due to statistically spurious random fluctuations. For example, the signal for the recently discovered Higgs boson is higher than the 5 sigma level.

If proper statistical analysis were applied, then all of the social sciences and climate science and most of biomedical research would disappear overnight.

During the filming of 1944’s “Lifeboat,” for example, starlet Tallulah Bankhead played the intrepid reporter Connie Porter. With Bankhead as his leading lady, Hitchcock had his hands full. Though descended from a proud and distinguished Southern family, Tallulah (whose success occurred mainly in the theatre) was proud to be contrary and consistently naughty. She once famously described herself as “pure as the driven slush,” and she wasn’t far off the mark.

A notorious on-set story: Bankhead had to climb a ladder every morning to reach the water tank where filming took place. Whenever the actress climbed, there would be scores of crew members watching her ascent. It soon became apparent why: Bankhead never wore underwear.

When a concerned bystander finally brought this matter to Hitchcock’s attention, at first the great man looked genuinely puzzled. Finally he replied, “I don’t know if this is a matter for the costume department, makeup, or hair dressing.

"We will not have him put down. Lucky is basically a damn good guide dog,'' Ernst Gerber, a dog trainer from Wuppertal told reporters. "He just needs a little brush-up on some elementary skills, that's all.''

Gerber admitted to the press conference that Lucky, a German shepherd guide-dog for the blind, had so far been responsible for the deaths of all four of his previous owners. "I admit it's not an impressive record on paper. He led his first owner in front of a bus, and the second off the end of a pier. He actually pushed his third owner off a railway platform just as the Cologne to Frankfurt express was approaching and he walked his fourth owner into heavy traffic, before abandoning him and running away to safety. But, apart from epileptic fits, he has a lovely temperament. And guide dogs are difficult to train these days.''

Asked if Lucky's fifth owner would be told about his previous record, Gerber replied: "No. It would make them nervous, and would make Lucky nervous. And when Lucky gets nervous he's liable to do something silly."
