When one reads about some place recommended as a travel destination, there is often a bit of a build up by the author.

When one visits, the experience can sometimes be underwhelming.

However, one place that completely exceeded my expectations was the Great Barrier Reef off of Australia: be it flying overhead, sailing, or diving.

That list is excessively Eurocentric. Europeans may be ruder than some other peoples, especially Americans, but it is the snotty condescension, nowadays totally unjustified, that gets up others noses, not manners.

In first place, by a mile, must come the Israelis (it does not apply to Jews in general, not even New York ones these days. New Yorkers are proud of their rudeness, but truth be told, they are not even in the top ten).

China has to be higher on the list, surely, with a language which does not even have a proper word for please, no conception of queueing, and quite open xenophobia.

Britain and France are complicated. The former has the capacity to be excessively polite or very rude - gentlemen or chavs. Not good at anything in between. Then there are the coded insults which foreigners do not often get e.g
"I hear what you say" = that's bollocks
"With all due respect" = with no respect whatsoever.

France gets a bad press, and not just from Anglo Saxons, but then there are two sorts of Frenchmen, Parisians and human beings. Parisians, like New Yorkers, seem to have been getting marginally more polite recently.

Bluntness is not the same as rudeness. I have found Russians in general to be blunt, friendly and a bit crazy, but not rude.

Americans I have found to be amongst the most polite of peoples generally, in a folksy sort of way.

Just curious what made you (and Typhoon) come to this judgement. I have met quite some Israelis but wouldn't label them rude as an average. Noisy yes, and also without much etiquette; no overdose of professional smiles or jolly kindness. In the beginning it came off more as cold, disinterested, a "spare me your crap" attitude. Later though I started to appriciate it as a form of honesty that also means "no pretence, we accept you as you are". You will never receive any faked forms of personal interest, to be sure. Culturally I would identify it as opposite the typical British "keeping up appearences" stereotype. ;)

BBC | America’s best north-south roads
Many of the best and most interesting roads in the United States run north to south, crossing the nation’s striations and taking you from northern weather and cultures to entirely different ones down south. As a bonus, these roads pack a lot into routes that are often shorter than the east to west standbys. For example, New York to San Francisco is about 2,900 miles by the most direct route, the snoozy I-80. But Chicago to Miami on the legendary US 41 through Memphis is only 1,400 miles -- and a thrilling journey from start to finish.

Often overlooked, the old national highways (those with route numbers proceeded by “US”) offer some incredible north-south journeys. At times the routes disappear under modern interstates but these are mere interruptions in authentic journeys of discovery and adventure. Here are some favourites.

Waterton Lakes National Park - townsite

Post by Antipatros »

As I promised Taboo, here are some photos of Waterton Lakes National Park from this June. It and Glacier National Park on the Montana side now form Waterton Glacier International Peace Park.

Waterton - Prince of Wales Hotel

The Prince of Wales Hotel on its promontory....

This Arts and Crafts masterpiece was built by the American Great Northern Railroad as a tourist resort. The winds which funnel up the valley were once so ferocious that they racked the hotel's timber frame. Teams of draft horses had to be brought in to straighten it.

It's called the Prince of Wales because the future Edward VII owned a large cattle ranch in the area.

This is an easy hike: my wife did it with a sprained ankle; elderly German tourists were having no difficulty either.

Waterton - Warning signs

The elk at Banff are renowned for their nastiness, but this was the first time I'd encountered ornery deer. One of them -- a doe, mind you -- tried rushing me and two large, deer-hating dogs. Parks Canada employs a woman and her six (or more) border collies to herd aggressive deer out of town!

There were also foxes hunting these blackguards in broad daylight:

And, of course, there are cougars, grizzly and black bears, and many other species.

A local Nissan dealer is running a contest. The prize is a trip to Hello Kitty Land (Sanrio Puroland) in Japan. The horror.

The "Land of Dreams" ads were in saturation coverage on our local newscasts, morning, noon and night, all summer long. I never did tire of them. Surely that must be one measure of a successful campaign.
