That is a very brilliant and effective ad.

Yet when he is on the podium, he often has spittle flying out of his mouth. :D Just kidding, but he does remind me of the disgruntled old farts one may find ranting at the local bar about the state of the country. "Damn Commies are destroying everything."

Interesting that you use the phrase "content free." Several co-workers and I were discussing POTUS campaigns a couple days ago. One noted they are all content free.

POTUS candidates never present plans with timelines, costs, what special interest group/regions will benefit, what group/region will be punished. It is always win-win for everyone.

Bernie and the Donald are both iconoclasts. Great symbols of the rampant populist discontent with both parties. Watching the two parties try to squash or co-opt them is one of the best POTUS campaign shows I can remember. It will be interesting to see if Bernie & Donald co-opt the establishments.

Bernie vs. Donald would be slap in the face to both parties.

Alex,

Right now, most of the talking heads are beating up Donald. If they succeed in crushing Donald, they will turn on Bernie. I'm not sure they have enough time to take out both.

I think Bernie just might be POTUS.

Very entertaining to see who is threatened by whom.

I don't think any wannabe leader has won any election, except perhaps in Switzerland, based on content.

Such wannabe leaders win elections by appealing to peoples fears and/or hopes.

"Content free"? That's an understatement.
I would have said: interstellar void :)

Being deprived of a view of where this man is standing (I heard of him being "the lone Socio-Democrat in US parliament", some kind of left-wing equivalent to Ron Paul, but wanted to know more), I found this video which in 5 minutes tells most of who he is and what he wants.

qyee_sxJpXc

It boggles the mind that the US presidency could really be disputed this time between "The Donald" and "Bernie". A right-wing populist and a socio-democrat.
R Times a'changing?

Incidentally, if Sanders was 1. nominated and 2. elected, he would be only the 2nd among 45 US presidents not to be a Protestant (that's how "diverse" the US are :| ) ... In that case, I would have to wish him not to encounter the same problems which befell the Catholic 1st - in his case, Dallas 1963 :( ...

Something must be said...

Post by Alexis »

- Given the course of the runs for Rep and Dem nomination...
- Given Bloomberg saying recently that if Trump and Sanders were the nominees, he would run as a third candidate and put 1 bn$ of personal money in it...
- Given the fact that this "B Plan for Establishment & Things as usual" that Bloomberg would become would risk not having enough political space to emerge on top, even given the number of Rep and Dem moderates unhappy with a Trump / a Sanders nominee...

...Something must be said.

Let me try to formulate it. I will express it as a logical condition, with two hypotheses:

IF (Sanders and Trump are the nominees)
AND (Each one of them is in good health by end October and has not encountered any character-destroying issue the like of what befell Strauss-Kahn in a New York hotel)
THEN (The lovers of conspiracy theories, those who are still wondering who exactly murdered JFK in Dallas and why, will have to admit that their conspiration scenarios are overblown)

Note that these are only two hypotheses.
Other hypotheses are conceivable.

I'm not so sure that video was as content free. Bernie gets across really, really well that he likes white people and is proud to surround himself with them. Not trying to be glib and cheeky here. It's his demographic, and he is playing right to them- that white bourgeoisie-manager class type that make up the rolls of the Democratic Party. From the maudlin music and nostalgia to the "aw shucks, everyone should get a fair shake" pitter patter, it's as if his campaign went to the old [is it still around?] Stuff White People Like website and sketched out the video from that.

Sanders is pretty white, but he is also the only candidate with a civil rights arrest record. I don't think trying to make him look like a bigot will work.

I never thought the phrase angry white man sounded bigoted, to me it just sounds like someone who time has passed by.

The beauty of modern tech is you can throw out anything "Bernie eats children!" "They caused my problem!" "The devil (or the inanimate object) made me do it!" and 5% or so will buy it.

5% is enough to swing elections. Which is why "they" are always courting the craziest 5%! ;)

If Clapton is God, shouldn't we be voting for Clapton?

If I can get federally matching funds, I'm getting in. I'm gonna restage Woodstock and blow all the other old hippies out of the water.

Not going to float here. Having a civil rights record has not stopped others from being called out for their bigotry (or accused of it, depending on how you approach it.)

Musicians are a sensitive lot, but Mr.Clapton is beyond normal in that regard. From what can be gathered through sources, he was always crying and blubbering at any sign of conflict or adversity. The man has no backbone stressful situations.

Besides, taken from his wikiquote, he has this in his past :

Do we have any foreigners in the audience tonight? If so, please put up your hands. Wogs I mean, I'm looking at you. Where are you? I'm sorry but some genuflecting wog...Arab grabbed my wife's bum, you know? Surely got to be said, yeah this is what all the genuflecting foreigners and wogs over here are like, just disgusting, that's just the truth, yeah. So where are you? Well wherever you all are, I think you should all just leave. Not just leave the hall, leave our country. You genuflecting (indecipherable). I don't want you here, in the room or in my country. Listen to me, man! I think we should vote for Enoch Powell. Enoch's our man. I think Enoch's right, I think we should send them all back. Stop Britain from becoming a black colony. Get the foreigners out. Get the wogs out. Get the coons out. Keep Britain white. I used to be into dope, now I'm into racism. It's much heavier, man. genuflecting wogs, man. genuflecting Saudis taking over London. Bastard wogs. Britain is becoming overcrowded and Enoch will stop it and send them all back. The black wogs and coons and Arabs and genuflecting Jamaicans and genuflecting (indecipherable) don't belong here, we don't want them here. This is England, this is a white country, we don't want any black wogs and coons living here. We need to make clear to them they are not welcome. England is for white people, man. We are a white country. I don't want genuflecting wogs living next to me with their standards. This is Great Britain, a white country, what is happening to us, for genuflect's sake? We need to vote for Enoch Powell, he's a great man, speaking truth. Vote for Enoch, he's our man, he's on our side, he'll look after us. I want all of you here to vote for Enoch, support him, he's on our side. Enoch for Prime Minister! Throw the wogs out! Keep Britain white!

-Quoted in Rebel Rock by J. Street. First Edition (1986). Oxford: Basil Blackwell. pp. 74-75. Street's sources are editions of the New Musical Express, Melody Maker and the Guardian and Times newspapers from the time. Other Sources: Virgin Media: Clapton's Shocking Rant Guardian Unlimited: The Ten Right-Wing Rockers. These statements were allegedly made on stage by a heavily drunk Clapton during a concert in Birmingham, UK, in 1976. Clapton is referring to British anti-immigration Conservative MP Enoch Powell. Clapton made similar further comments to the audience later in the evening. Clapton has never denied making these statements and has refused to apologise for his remarks or distance himself from them, although he denies that his views are racist and states that he is merely an opponent of mass immigration. This incident was the main inspiration for the formation of Rock Against Racism.

Clapton went into a rap about Enoch. His initial line was "Enoch's right — I think we should send them back." I don't think he said "nigger" he said "wogs". He definitely said, "Keep Britain White". Nobody cheered, but after he played another song, he did the same again. It was extraordinary — but he stood there being overtly offensive and racist. I was completely mystified as to why this man playing black music would behave this way.

-Author Caryl Philips, referring to the aforementioned Birmingham concert in 1976, at which Phillips was present. Quoted by author Robin Denselow in When The Music Stopped: The Story of Political Pop, Faber and Faber (1989), pp. 138-139.

"I used to be into dope, now I'm into racism. It's much heavier, man." is one of my favorite quotes. ;)

Musicians can get away with stuff that even comedians can't say. Eric probably stole that from Al or Jesse. nap, you are awesome. Yer one of my favorite WOPs er, uh, I mean wogs! :P

And if you think about the fact that more than a few people have made a ton of money selling both drugs and racism...

Hell's bells! If someone will buy, the free market ensures someone else will sell. I think most anti-free marketeers are crusaders because it destroys their myths.

"The Bern" & forbidden pleasures of the Old Left

Post by Alexis »

Yes, The Bern is old school. Old values of the Old Left.

Look up this video by economist Robert Reich dispelling "6 myths" about Sanders. An old white male (the horror!) speaking and writing on a board. How so un-advertising-like! How so un-modern!

How can one assume to speak to the populace with facts, figures and reasoning, as if they were able to understand, ponder and decide like citizens and expect be followed by the rabble, which advertising specialists know answer only to manipulation?

Almost perverse, indeed.

Anyway, here is it:

Alexis,

It would not surprise me if Bernie wins. Then watch how much "we" bitch about what he tries to do or the cost of his programs.

My Brit buddy was the perfect indicator. He quoted Marx to me for years. When I asked him to instill that ideology in his 16 month old daughter, cause she was going to have abilities, at the same time, I was going to have needs..... he looked like I kicked him in the nuts and he was going to vomit. I "Americanized" him with just a couple sentences.

I would be confident betting that Robert Reich has an above average net worth and hires accountants and attorneys to lower his tax payments.

People are funny.
