Folks,
I have been taking an interest in American history recently, and turned up the following quotation.
“.. the founders were not democrats; they wanted to reserve the franchise for property owners, those with a stake in society, rather than the ‘demos’ - the crowd of dependent wage labourers..” (1)
This quote is helpful in understanding the structure of the US political system, and what the founders were shaping with their constitution. I believe this structure also informs the themes which dominate exchanges between the GOP and the democrats today. (2)
One wonders: how long can this structure prevail?
Alex.
