They don't speak the same language, for one. Then they don't recognize the same history as their past. They don't feel members of the same nation, reason why they do not salute the same flag nor sing the same national hymn nor remember the same heroes. Nor do they follow the same laws, voted in the same parliament that they don't elect together. And they certainly don't want to continue living within the same nation since they don't teach their children the language, laws, heroes, victories and tragedies of the same history.
Seriously now: the comparison of the US and the EU is very shallow. What counts is not the size of a human entity, neither geographical nor population number, it is the loyalty people belonging to that entity feel towards the laws, history, interests and future of that entity, which is known as "a nation".
Iceland and China are two nations, in spite of the latter being 4,000 times more populated than the former.
Neither the EU nor Wisconsin are nations. No more than the Harlem district of New-York or the Mercosur.

Partition into 50 States.
.
Make it 50 countries and nations, with border control and custom duty and and .. people moving from Kansas to NY considered as "immigrants" and needing work permit.
How far is from Brussel to Amsterdam ? 100 m .. you can walk that distance
Come on

That would be a fascinating vote, and only slightly less doable than assuming 320+ million people spread out over 3.8 million square miles are going to agree on much of anything. American culture? Huh? Which zipcode?Nonc Hilaire wrote:

NY would split into at least two states, VA two states, CA probably into 3 to 6 states. Population density and the resultant problems still seems to be a much stronger driver than ideology to me.
It would be similar to Brexit vote, why should the UK en masse decide to stay or leave? If Scotland wants in, but England wants out, but London wants in, why not? Shirley, they should be allowed to vote as individuals. EU citizenship or local. Taxes and benefits to be determined by citizenship. No different than joining a union, or a Sam's Club!

I don't vote against Macron for this reason, but it did attract quite a lot of attention including in faraway countries...

It's far from being the most important argument against him, but it does worsen the picture even more. Of course it's quite similar to the Trump couple with Donald (70) and Melania (46)... with one fundamental difference, though: it's not Melania Americans have elected president!

Lets be fair, and, accurate
Brigitte Macron teaches French and Latin @ Jesuit high school. She must have something "special" when a good looking French man 24 yrs younger falls in love with her, it for sure was not the shape of her butt or tits or her extraordinary technique of giving BJ that made Macron fall for her .. SEX happens in the brain and not between the legs a french saying.
Melania different story .. contrary to French, for Trump (type of hustlers) nothing happens in the brain but all happens between the legs .. Daily mail said it, there is Zero doubt she was an "escort" in Milan (those Italians BANG anything) .. that Daily Mail episode remind me of "Liberace", homosexual to the bone, suing and winning that he ain't
Come on

Besides, I believe in Christ, and as you certainly know, he who would despise somebody for a fault or an error, e.g. reject and despise a woman because she used to be a prostitute... would expose himself to a BIG NO NO from Jesus who brought good news of forgiveness and guidance from God to all humankind - but on specific condition of being oneself ready to forgive.
Jesus had very harsh words against the dryness of heart of some Pharisees. One does not want to stand with that group ...

No, I'm thinking of the trend to psychological dependency that one may suspect somebody engaged in a relationship with a partner a quarter century his senior to possess...
If Melania Trump has such a trend, that's merely a personal issue, not to worry any American.
If Emmanuel Macron has such a trend, and he becomes our president, errrr....

True, if Dominique Strauss-Kahn a serious presidential contender (considering all France knew the facts), who cares about the other stuff.
In that respect, Melania innocent .. rather, this more about Trump & company.
Re Jesus having very harsh words against the dryness of heart of some Pharisees, Melania does not look like the woman bringing dry bread to Jesus as you mention .. rather Melania still seems has all mind into cat walk for Emanuel Ungaro and Valentino and Channel .. east Europeans feel they escaped poverty and now is GUCCI time, with vengeance .. they looking for rich husband who can pay the bill for their expensive expenditures, age and look (and other stuff) immaterial .. haven't seen a single east European girl who thinks otherwise, and seen quite
Funny is, when you go to the men washroom of rich casinos in Europe, you see young and attractive east european girls waiting by the door to help their (90+ yrs old) husband (and sugar daddy) walk back to the table

I don't think having a need for support from one's spouse at one's working meetings is healthy. He wants to go further than any president before him in giving his wife an official role. If elected, he will hold a consultation to define the ambiguous status of first lady in France and draw up a job description for the first time. Brigitte Macron “won’t be paid by the taxpayer”, he promised this week, but he said that as president, “the person who lives with you must have a role”.
(...)
Brigitte Macron appeared at his ministerial diary planning meetings and became a regular fixture at the ministry, where the couple had a flat. Macron told surprised journalists: “Her view matters to me.” He implied that her presence beside him was non-negotiable. “One can’t work when one’s not happy,” he said.
That's what bothers me, not the "unconventional" part.
Re: France
If he is in great part her creation it doesn't bode well. Brigitte Macron being a female, language teacher, art fanatic, pushing her young gifted Prince to the throne.. is a toxic mix in every aspect. There is something about his public appearances that says "I'm not really here".

I can't get past the constant labeling of Macron as an independent or an outsider.
Everyone knows that going against the fact that financial ministers in all of human history are always 'consummate insiders'*; the French switched things up and took in some dirty stray mutt of an outsider and handed him the keys to the vault. It was her way of saying, "Hey, we don't care about our money and this guy needs a sandwich!"
*they're consummate insiders unless you are conquered. In those cases, it's pretty likely to be raging outsiders to you but consummate insiders to someone else.

Maybe we're saying the same thing in different ways....
...my point is about maturation and arrested development. Melania (as she's a public example), whatever her reasoning, was mature enough to understand what she was getting into by marrying an older man. She was also in her late 20s. The sex roles or age variance are good for a joke or two but not much more- doesn't matter. But the younger one spouse gets, the more questions it raises around maturity, and in that sense, I understand your concern about psychological dependency.
When the boy was 15 or 16 or whatever and professing his love for this woman (and his parents attempted to separate the two!) lots of red flags are raised about his maturation and how he's developed.

“Colonization is a crime. It’s a crime against humanity. It’s truly barbarous and it’s part of a past that we need to confront by apologizing to those against whom we committed these acts,” Macron said.
“At the same time, we must not sweep this past under the rug…There’s a fitting phrase that is said about Algeria: ‘France established human rights in Algeria. It simply forgot to abide by them,’” the politician added.
