Put in Merkin terms, you've gone from being the Mississippi of the EU, to being the Alabama of the EU! Don't get complacent! Keep pushing!
Soon as you to the West Virginia level of the EU, tourism should explode and you'll all be rich!

Final tally for last Sunday's presidential election (second round): Iohannis - 66.09%, Dancila 33.91%. Dancila got the lowest score of any PSD candidate in 30 years. Almost 1 million people came out to vote in the diaspora, with 93% of them voting Iohannis.

Interesting timing....Three Women Accuse Gordon Sondland of Sexual Misconduct
Breitbart News27 Nov 2019 2:43
Washington (AFP) – A US ambassador nominated by President Donald Trump who provided key testimony in his impeachment hearings was accused Wednesday of sexual misconduct by three women.
Gordon Sondland, the US envoy to the European Union, denied the allegations, with his lawyer alleging that the accusers were trying to taint his credibility in the inquiry.

It's interesting to compare the esthetics of the younger generations (IKEA + I'll only buy what I need) with the echoes of the 19th century (big closet, wall to wall carpet, display cabinet).

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/coro ... -vvglpxks2British farmers are being forced to fly in fruit and vegetable pickers from Romania using specialist charter jets to keep up with demand during the coronavirus lockdown.
The first charter flight operating between Bucharest and London Stansted will land tomorrow, bringing about 180 farm workers to the UK from eastern Europe. The plane is the first of up to six to operate in the coming months to keep farms staffed with labourers.
Turns out they need us. Romanian farm workers are leaving the country right now, by the thousands. German asparagus needs about 40,000 workers, which Germany can't provide. A producer said German workers are not suitable because they complain of back pains quickly and want one or two days off per week, whereas dumb Romanians work through Sundays and holidays. But he assured the public that Romanian workers will be kept in sheds, away from the local population.
Thousands of women went to Austria to take care of the elderly. When the epidemic first struck, these women were thrown out by the Austrian hosts and left to make their way back to the home country. Later, they hired charter planes to bring them back. Put them down in the official documents as "repatriated to Austria", lol.
Same thing in Italy, Spain and England.

My Brit buddy who used to think Merkins were nuts and wasteful, now brags about his full sized pickup truck. "I thought it was nuts for a vehicle to have an 8 cylinder engine! This thing is great. I lay a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood flat in the back and it has tons of power. I can haul 2000 lbs of whatever I want in this thing. I can go as fast as I want. Petrol is dirt cheap! The same with food and clothes and electricity!"
Hopefully, Romanians will never succumb to the temptations of selfishness.

same in australia and new zealand with south east asians.
same all over the west - borderline legal labour using poor people for seasonal work so we can have cheap fruit and veg.
a few decades ago when I was dead sick of office work and its people I tried my hand at the "work aussies are too lazy to do " .. it was ok enough, I had done gold drilling and other heavy manual labour jobs before but the wages were so poor a week of work only paid for a week of Australian living.
this is not sustainable for a seasonable job, that only provides 3-6 months work tops, without constant travel to new regions but with the poor people they get to make a years wages in the old country in just a few months, so its "win win" allegedly.
back in the old days the guys in my country that did that work used to live for free in shanties on the beach and spent the other 6 months of the year surfing, fishing and drinking beer with those dollars.
its all a romantic past now, back when we where free people, all the shanty towns got bulldozed.

Very true. Even used to be true in "the north" part of Merka with "southerners."
In my youth I worked with Mexican and Puetro Rican migrant laborers who were very happy to come to upstate NY and work for a few months. Then head back home or to another US state with a different climate. They told the same tales.
I was hoping to do the same. In the early 80's I found myself in Alaska. Planned to work up there for a few years, 3 weeks on of 7 12 hour days, 3 weeks off, bank every penny and do something akin to a hobby for the rest of my life. Damn economic slowdowns.
I thought the elimination of borders was supposed to fix all that horribly inequality..... or maybe it was the internet that was supposed to be the solution....... bring us all together ya know..... then we found out some of us didn't like the others of us...... then they made us sick..... physically ill, I mean..... cough, cough,

- you and your friends live in a rural or semi-rural* region, as opposed to urban Western Europe, meaning you have enough room to build a big house and you actually need a car;
- you and your friends are relatively well paid;
Maybe your friend actually needs to transport sheets of plywood and 2000 lbs of whatever. Can't say I do. At least not more than once a year or so, and when I do need a truck, I can call on friends/relatives. Food and electricity are relatively cheap where I live. Clothes prices are not really the fault of "big government". Then again, cheap clothes means US jobs were lost to very low paid West Asians so... enjoy?
*Most cities in the US are semi-rural from my point of view.

Re: Romania
this practice has been banned in australia because the government considered it tax evasion - free accommodation means all sorts of fees and taxes not being paid on wages earnt - it still happens however because nobody checks fruit and vege farms for Vietnamese in the shed.
it is essential for this dodgy arangement to work however - if those Romanians had to pay German or English rent and bills, the money they earnt would be worth nothing and they wouldnt do it.
its only living minimalist with free board and food that it makes sense.

Probably, from your point of view, at least regarding transportation, perhaps only NYC and another half-dozen big cities in the US are not semi-rural. Lots of NYC'ers don't even own a car. My point was that those who often argue the loudest for the communal virtues of being part of "we...." when given the option of being a "me, rather than merely a subunit of we......." perhaps for the first time in their adult lives...... are suddenly thrilled when they find out what the products they buy and use everyday really cost..... when it does not have the cost of someone else's education, retirement, or health care costs buried in the price.
The eternal battle summed up, how to get the "me's" to surrender their "me-ness" in the short term (years or decades?) for the good of the "we self identity" in the long term. Easy to do in the abstract, not so easy on the personal level.

Australia also is a lot like that for cars aswell - its because our countries are new I think, everything is built around a post car world, spaced out and lacking in public transport or river transport. Europe and Asia, you can live your life in walking distance.

agreed. Street width is probably a good indicator of the "oldness" of the local culture. IIRC, the last Injun uprising in Merka was only 100 years ago. Might be a bit too soon to hang up the guns in case the lefties decide to do something similar.noddy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 3:15 pm

Fascinates me to see how quickly the Yurps who used to believe in "we" become believers in "me" once they get to Merka. All culture is local.
I suspect that after spending about 12 months in Romania, I would also be very "Roman-like."

I very much doubt the food and room are free. Also, minimalist living means the employer will throw you out if you get sick.

I doubt Romanians are so stupid as to work for free - the maths has to be that 3 months of living on the floor and eating communal stew gives you more money than you can earn back home, so its usually free food and sleeping, it literally costs the farmer only a couple of dollars a day.
yes, you will get thrown out if you get sick, the pay will be few cents per item picked, and no picking means no pay.
