Working with wireless power specialists LaserMotive, Lockheed Martin has successfully completed preliminary tests of a new laser refueling system that extended the flight time of its Stalker unmanned aerial drone to over 48 hours.
That not only represents about a 2,400 percent increase in flight duration, but the system also doesn't require another aircraft to deliver the fuel boost. Instead, ground-based lasers—from a mobile vehicle or stable delivery platform—simply target the craft's solar cells while it circles overhead. The initial tests on the Stalker were conducted in a controlled wind tunnel, and at its conclusion the drone's batteries actually had a greater charge than when the test was started. And theoretically, it means the only reason a reconnaissance drone would ever have to land would be for physical maintenance, or if it gets shot down. [Lockheed Martin via Gizmag]

Amid concerns of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz during a potential crisis, the U.S. Navy is beginning to develop and release a set of underwater drones to find and destroy sea mines present in the Persian Gulf, according to U.S. officials.

I posted a fictitious video of a mini drone weapons system earlier. Here is a video of a genuine research project that has the goal of weaponizing these little cuties!
As I understand it, they are to be loaded with an explosive to be detonated when they 'perch'!

NYT | Skilled Work, Without the Worker
This is the future. A new wave of robots, far more adept than those now commonly used by automakers and other heavy manufacturers, are replacing workers around the world in both manufacturing and distribution.
Even as Foxconn, Apple’s iPhone manufacturer, continues to build new plants and hire thousands of additional workers to make smartphones, it plans to install more than a million robots within a few years to supplement its work force in China.
Foxconn has not disclosed how many workers will be displaced or when. But its chairman, Terry Gou, has publicly endorsed a growing use of robots. Speaking of his more than one million employees worldwide, he said in January, according to the official Xinhua news agency: “As human beings are also animals, to manage one million animals gives me a headache.”

i do find amusing its the bosses fault they cant deal with other humans stress on dealing with other humans stress.
or something like that, i do get confused as to which humans are required to be superhuman egoless wonder machines that make jesus look like a caveman and which humans are delicate creatures that need everyone else to be travelling on a higher level than them.
in a feeble attempt to add some content to this, i noticed this article about how workers cant deal with the stress of interacting with other humans either.ALMOST half of Australian workers would rather quit a job than deal with office tension, a survey shows.
The poll, commissioned by suicide prevention group RU OK?, found bosses often lacked the skills to discuss difficult issues.

Being able to manage personalities is one of the core competencies that falls under the title 'management'. The better you are at it, the more successful your company will be. I had a hard slap in the face where I was bad as management in the past year on that level. I learned a lot about what I did wrong.noddy wrote:http://www.news.com.au/business/worklif ... 6454806439

without a doubt and if people embrace their personal responsibility to be a solid member of society this kind of thinking is what "should" take place.Enki wrote:Being able to manage personalities is one of the core competencies that falls under the title 'management'. I dont say it lightly, my own experience has been a story of changing myself from being totally crap at dealing with others endless "shoulds" until now im just somewhat crap at it
alas, management is just humans and from their perspective the workers who live without the stress of dealing with the banks/customers big lists of "shoulds" also have a few "shoulds" of their own.
anyway, i was getting at the likely outcomes .. which as we all know is the reduction of stress and conflict in our lives, hence the rise of robots.. its inevitable.
humans also cant cross bridges until they get to them and getting people to understand the consequences of sacking all the "customers" for your products is unlikely to happen until their arent any customers left.. so roll on the robots, roll on hard..

Drones could soon operate without the help of humans.
Agence France-Presse is reporting that the Pentagon wants its drones to be more autonomous, so that they can run with little to no assistance from people.
“Before they were blind, deaf and dumb,” Mark Maybury, chief scientist for the U.S. Air Force, told AFP. “Now we’re beginning to make them to see, hear and sense.”
Ronald Arkin, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, believes that drones will soon be able to kill enemies on their own independently.
“It is not my belief that an unmanned system will be able to be perfectly ethical in the battle field, but I am convinced that they can perform more ethically than human soldiers are capable of,” Arkin told AFP.

Present wars, say carpet bombing with B-2 bombers or hitting a building or killing anything that moves and and and does not need human input .. drones and robots, even primitive ones, can do it easily
Problem arises, when human judgments, moral, ethic, civilians or combatants sort of decisions has to be made
That is the point, when NATO and American military bombs killing civilians, that indicates more and more decisions are made by robot type and less humans .. can not believe even Americans would bomb knowing killing mostly woman and children
Notion, moral ethical and other considerations too can be programed into robots misunderstands the nature of robots, judgment mostly does not correlates with logic and reason

mobile phones with unique id's and gps are real easy to find and for those not silly enough to carry one when they have the drawn the eye of sauron, then face and gait detection could also work while searching areas that the target is know to habit.
we have plenty of ways to identify unique individuals with a reasonable level of accuracy and false positives are acceptable if its national security and the ratio of friendly fire to "terrorist" deaths are low.
it would just be like those room sweeping toys that map out a house and then chaotically bump their way around, with the above helpers added to refine it.
