Germans are completely crazy. The siesta institution has been gone so long that few people will remember how it was. In any case a couple of hours stop at noon would not mean less work, but simply that people would work until later. That's why Spanish dinners were always so late. In any case, is there any reason why working eight hours in a row is better than working two four hour shifts with a two to three hour intermission?...

The Protestant work ethic stuff is historically a load of rubbish anyway. First industrial region in Europe was the UK (Protestant) but the second was Belgium (Catholic, well ahead then of its Protestant neighbour the Netherlands ) and the third was the Rhineland part of Germany (Catholic). What did they have in common? Coal reserves.

Conversely Protestant Scandinavia stayed poor until the early 20C when hydro electric power arrived.

Folks,

I think the 'protestant work ethic' is for people who lack mental discipline.

People who think they have mental discipline are fooling themselves. There is no such thing. There are people with good habits and people with bad habits.
