Movies and stuff

Post by Mr. Perfect »

Ok I'm gonna go a little weird on you here, but really I don't know what else to do.

When I was a kid/teenager I made some wildly entertaining movies that still hold up to this day, I show them on occasion to new people and really they still knock people's socks off and I really enjoyed everything about it. I had an expectation at the time that I would make Hollywood movies. Life happened and it never went anywhere.

In the 80's you could go to the movies (theater) 2 or 3 times a month and the Video store on the other weekends and have a wildly entertaining experience, and a lot of those movies still hold up. Nowadays I go maybe 2-3 times a year with little expectation of entertainment and ultimately because I'm dragged. I do Netflix but 3/4 of the movies are documentary/nonfiction, most of the fiction movies are at least several years old and usually older, and any new releases are more out of curiosity than anything else. My family's viewing habits mirror mine. I probably watch one disc per week via netflix tops, I guess that would include streaming.

My favorite movie is Raiders of the Lost Ark, mostly because of the depiction of Arabs (jk ibs). I could watch it once a week and never get tired of it. The Expendables movies are like Shakespeare to me. The depth and gravitas of those movies can never be adequately described.

I really hate movies and tv and I feel like they represent something incredibly negative about human beings. When I find out people are dependent on tv and movies I lose total respect for them.

I have a great deal of interest in movies on a technical basis. On occasion I will take a movie that I sort of like, say Terminator II, this would be an old airplane thing, the advent of laptop dvd you'd watch it on the plane and skip the boring sections and just watch the interesting sections. If you do this a couple of times you can boil down 2 hour movies to under 10 minute sometimes. So they spend 2-3 years and tens to hundreds of millions of dollars to make it and maybe 10 minutes is watchable on a repetitive basis. So you wonder why they made the other 110 minutes and you wonder what in the dark recesses of our minds enjoys the 10 minutes. What's going on there. Ayn Rand says "sense of life" and I think she's on to something but it's incomplete. And what need does that fill.

The entertainment business is endlessly fascinating, there are no rules and it's cowboy capitalism at it's finest, on a business level you have as blank canvas as you do for your stories. Yet the product sucks and it's infested with state slaving socialists.

I have a tremendous respect and fascination with pronoprono. In our prono culture it can be hard to avoid. However I can't remember ever seeking it out, actually watching other people do that makes me queasy. I don't like public sexuality. I'm fascinated that people can do that in front of a camera and photographers, etc, in that to me it's as impossible as relieving oneself in front of other people. I don't know how you could do that and your desecendants now for generations will be able to watch their grandparent fornicate with hired strangers. I can't wrap my mind around that. I have a lot of respect for the chix. Hollywood bimbos strike me as really asexual. Nowadays they race to get nude but they won't do the full monty, the full thing, the deed. The prono chiks, they'll go all the way. The hollywood bimbos seem to me like they like the ego attention, perceived status, money, female competitiveness and so forth and have no interest in the actual thing, it's just a tease. We are told celebrities are the most beautiful people in the world but whenever I'm at a community college or my wife's salon I see women as good looking as any women who have won Time Magazine "most beautiful woman in the world" Gwyneth Paltow whatever. But they all seem frigid, ie the most beautiful people alive can't keep a sex partner for more than 10 minutes. Lotta passive aggressive stuff going on there.

When I was growing up women demanded that you respect them for their brains and not treat them like a piece of meat, nowadays liberal culture celebrity women demand you treat them like an object and a piece of meat with no brain. WTH women.

When I was a kid I used to think movies were supposed to be about ideas and stuff but when it became clear that movies are largely vehicles for the ego gratification of the participants, a vehicle to have people look at you, and as such I can't understand why anyone watches them. Most people that are in movies and make them are totally deplorable.

I find myself in certain social situations where all people can do is talk about movies or celebrities and if you try to talk about your own personal lives or interests people look at you like your pants are full of your own excrement and they can smell it. I am very disturbed by these kinds of people. Many people have a hard time conceptualizing certain aspects of life if no one has made a movie about it. "It's like in that movie". Movies, I have to explain to people, are fake.

Netflix is overflowing with terrible B movies direct to video starring big hollywood names that absolutely suck, and you wonder why it's so hard to break into that business.

When I was young I went to the movies a lot. Where I lived there was almost no TV. The one station we got didn't even start broadcasting until 4 p.m.

Later in life, up through the eighties and into the nineties, I still went to a lot of movies. It was actually part of my job to stay knowledgable, so I kept up.

Then, in the early years of this century I did sort of a retrospective, watching hundreds of movies that I'd seen before once again just to see what I thought of them all these years laters.

Nowadays I seldom watch feature films, although occasionally I find some European, Chinese, or Indian movies that escaped my notice earlier. The movies coming out of the U.S. these days generally don't interest me enough to spend any time with them. I'm sure I'm being a bit prejudiced here. Maybe I need some good recommendations.

I used to watch a lot of science fiction. I also like historical epics, even if almost all of them are no more true to life than baroque opera. Guess I just like to watch guys running around in togas. Tend to really dislike films with a "message", particularly a political one. I think there's more truth in fantasy than in documentary.

Opera stars can at least sing. What can Hollywood stars do? As you point out, they don't even know how to f u c k.

For the first time ever, audiences get a behind-the-scenes insight into the world's first truly global media event: "Operation Cablerun" : the 2011 operation during which WikiLeaks ran hundreds of thousands of secret US government cables to media outlets around the world.

In Mediastan, an undercover team of journalists drives across the central Asian republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and into US occupied Afghanistan, before continuing its journey into the west; regrouping in Julian Assange's kitchen, ambushing the editor of the Guardian, and obtaining candid footage of the New York Times editor and its publisher Arthur Sulzberger.

One question that doesn't leave me is why Wiki leaks went around trying to find publishers... and not just threw it all on the Internet themselves? First editing out data and names that could put people in danger.. but even so. Why leave it all to others to do that? :?

Interesting point though is that they showed that news agencies don't want to be or can't be really independent and free. Either a dictator looks over their shoulder, a business can't start a law suit that will financially ruin a newspaper as with the guardian, and/or the arms of politics reach into their bedrooms as with the New York Times.

Nothing new perhaps.. but case in point. All the more reason to wonder why Wiki leaks did/does not publish their stuff themselves.

The stupidest generation - Larry Eubank, New English Review, November 2013
http://www.newenglishreview.org/custpag ... _id/142245

Movies Are Stupider

Stupidity starts with our English usage, but it doesn't end there. Seemingly every aspect of our culture is being invaded and overwhelmed by stupidity. Our movies, our TV shows, our "music," our politicians – all stupider than ever before.

"Movies are dreck." That blunt assessment was made by author and columnist Joe Queenan; and it would be hard to deny it. Blogger "Ace of Spades HQ" said, ("Why Movies Are Awful: An Insider Report," http://ace.mu.nu/archives/335421.php, Dec. 04, 2012):
Movies really have become awful, haven't they… It's very hard to name movies made in the last 20 years which are made for adults.…

Almost every studio movie is just an assemblage of things that have worked in other movies for the last 20 years. And as Hollywood's hits are fewer and further between, every movie seems to be rehashing the same Moments That Worked from previous movies.

Most movies are rather simple-minded today. Some of them are "like watching the tantrum of a neglected psychotic child," said Richard Brookhiser – and he wasn't even discussing Quentin Tarantino!

Movie-makers seem to have run out of ideas, or at least, intelligent ideas. They're raking through the ashes of past movie vitality, looking for an ember they can fan back into life – some movie, TV show, comic book or amusement-park ride they can repackage. ...

This book seems to be the source of all the similarities. I read an article about this, but didn't save the original reference.

I think a great movie tells a good story.

Many scripts today seem to lack cohesion and continuity.

That many current Hollywood movies seem to be written by and for 17 year old boys is spot on.

While I enjoy escapism at the movies, I found The Expendables to be forgettable.

Red did a better job of the ole-timer genre. Space Cowboys did a better job than both.

As for escapism, I'd rather watch a screwball comedy from the 1930's.

Pacific Rim blew Avatar straight out of the water. I would say one of the great 3 CG movies of all time. Jurassic Park, Transformer 1, and Pacific Rim. In terms of visuals they were all "game changers" in the spectacle of big things genre. The story of Pacific Rim was as bad as Avatar.

Have you seen Iranian movies lately, Colonel ? ?

IMHO, one's time is valuable .. and .. spending 2 hrs watching a movie should make a (deep) impression in one that make one think (and enjoy) about the movie for a while .. when I was student in Zurich @ ETH, we saw a lot of French and European movies .. unfortunately today Holly-Wood makes shallow movies for Lady Gaga and Micheal Jackson followers, empty .. or .. it is Zionist propaganda feeding western Joe with "manufactured" fake Jewish history .. or .. Iran bashing

Watch Iranian film , colonel, Iran's "Fish and Cat" named best film at Portuguese festival

imho a movie should be funny or shallow eye candy action that gives me a break from a world full of real deep problems and dramas.

after a day of dealing with the emotional problems and panic attacks of my clients and investors and then dealing with the myriad of things that pop up in my private world i really cant imagine wanting to see fake versions of it for entertainment.

the australian film industry is a classic for not understanding this, they constantly make these depressing dramas about problem families and druggies and then claiming the australian population is too stupid to understand their insightful artistic depth when in reality this crap is our neighbours, it is our relatives and its only sheltered middle class arts students who find it interesting or new.

having said that their needs to be wit in the script for it to be enjoyable and much of the modern crap doesnt have that, making it barely watchable.

It reads better than it lives.

I recall regretting watching one such Singaporean movie that the art house critics were raving about.

Goodfellas was a very good movie, but after the movie I could not help to reflect on the shallow and utterly banal day-to-day existence of the main characters.

I think y'all aren't engaging what is out there. The crap is bad for the arteries, but it isn't like people just decided to stop making good films.

I don't think a lot of people understand what a good film is- of course I do being the expertly expert that I am. ;)

Goodfellas is a terrible film- most Scorese stuff is worthless nihilistic fetish crap.

Pacific Rim was the most fun I've had with a monster spectacle movie in a long time- I'm not sure how "good" it is though- but maybe I'm not the audience. There was a lot WRONG with it.

This:

OcUWE2TrSR0

is one of my favorite comedy scenes of the last 10 years. The way he nonchalantly pulls the gun out; how he half asses his over reaction- cracks me up every time.

Yeah, Wes Anderson is a hipster dream director but don't underestimate him. The Life Aquatic is both a mess and a must watch. Royal Tannenbaums was the film that completely changed my view of movies and Gene Hackman knocks it out of the park.

I don't know about the visuals. Yeah, the script was atrocious and the actors/director didn't help it in any way.

Outside of a few scenes though, it wasn't Del Toro at his best. The opening sequence in the water was great- there is that wide shot two shot where the camera pans around with the waves that really stood out to me- but it seemed he had trouble deciding how to use many of the visual B-movie monster spectacle tropes. Most of it was rather boring and cheesy; and by the character designs, I have a hunch that there was a bit of movie studio pressure for the Transformer/Gundam/Power Rangers style. Idris Elba was okay, the guy who looked like Heath Ledger and Rinko Kikuchi weren't. Her basic understanding of English probably hindered her performance some but overall there was no chemistry or charisma. It didn't help that half way through the uncanny Heath Ledger look alike started creeping me out.

It needed more Ron Perlman. They should have stuck with making another Hellboy.

That's more critical than I intended. :P
