Apparently not enough said, those TFRs are dropping and are already too low to support Ponzi entitlements. With current debt levels or no.

Ouch. Looks like Japan is going fascist.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... -rate.html
Tokyo funds matchmaking parties to boost birth rate
Japan’s birth rate is at its lowest since records began in 1899 and if current trends continue it will lose a third of its population in the next 50 years

The Japanese government is funding matchmaking events in a desperate attempt to boost a birth rate that has halved over the past six decades.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has allocated an additional 3 billion yen (£17.7 billion) in this fiscal year’s budget for birthrate-boosting programmes as part of a strategy to reverse the nation’s shrinking population.

Japan is home to one of the fastest ageing societies in the world, with the population shrinking at a record 244,000 in 2013 alone, according to government figures.

The support of marriage - and the active encouragement of young people to settle down - is regarded by government policy-makers as a key strategy for boosting the nation’s birth rate.

As a result, local authorities are now able to apply for central government grants of up to 40 million yen (£237,000) for projects relating to supporting marriage and boosting birth rates, according to Bloomberg.

Taking more than a fair amount of license in equating gōkon [matchmaking] parties with Nashi youth procreation camps*

Anyways, I doubt that it will have much of an impact {Singapore has been trying this for several decades] until at least the following two issues are addressed:

1/ The cultural expectation that a woman stops working once she marries; and

2/ The availability of daycare.

Part of the solution

The elephant in the room is the availability of sufficiently stable and well paying jobs for youth such that young people would be optimistic enough about the future to form households.

1. Even with replacement level TFR, the baby boomers would drive entitlement schemes deep into the red.

2. Except for Russia, which has been yo-yo-ing between 1.0 and 1.6, all of the countries I listed have been around that level for decades, a level, I might add, superior to Russia's. France's TFR has been at replacement for almost a decade, and has actually been slowly increasing since 1990. Russia also has the highest Muslim share of the population in Europe, not that that should make a big difference.

In keeping with the Prophetic theme, Republicans have been pointing this out since at least the 1980's.

Unfortunately/Fortunately France's debt ensures they won't survive the coming bubble pop.

Tinker, this is a purely academic question I always wonder if leftists feel more loyalty to the home party in the home nation or if they feel more loyal to Mother Russia. IME I have found leftists to be really torn on the issue. As a pure curiosity I was wondering how you felt about it.

From where I sit it's been right-wing media that's been rooting for Putin lately. It's been kind of bizarro world listening to all the right-wing pundits wax poetic about how sexy and virile Putin is and talking about Obama wearing Mom jeans. The homophilia that has been expressed openly for him has been downright bizarre.

That being said, I couldn't care less about the fate of Crimea and most of Europe feels the same.

The US is losing it's golden perch as the world's biggest and baddest bully. And I am happy for that, because I love my country and American exceptionalism has been very damaging to us.

A strawman argument of course. I can't find anyone who loves Putin, but frankly you have to respect someone who is at the top of their game, playing chess in multiple dimensions whilst the obama hollande contingent plays checkers in 2 dimensions. You don't have to be fan of Lebron James to respect what he's doing. But of course all of this goes without saying.

Whats wrong with homosexuality.

Boy that is sure evident. You can include so many other countries to that list, people who you and Europeans couldn't care less about. Very self absorbed people. But of course none of this is anything to do with Crimea.

So I guess you don't want to answer the question but reading the tea leaves sound like Mother Russia. Fair enough. Just thought I would ask.

You of course care so much you'd rob them of their right of self-determination and overturn the referendum if you could.

Well no. Who wouldn't want to support a referendum administered by tanks and soldiers of an occupying army. obama rejected the referendum Tinker. Maybe you should get mad at him. he wants to rob thme of their self determination.

Indeed, you two have much in common.

Nah, I have picked, "I don't want to be the world's policeman and I don't buy that we have brought stability to the world during our tenure as such."

Cold warriors like yourself just rub one out to war. It's pornography to think about how much you hate Russia. Makes you feel like a MAN! That's why Conservatives have bene using terms like, "potence", so often when describing Putin. And why they are staring at Obama's physique in his "mom jeans".

Obama's just another Neocon durian. Black Reagan.

I don't know Tinker I don't have a dog in the fight. You see I'm a cold warrior. This all very old dynamics playing out. I've seen this movie dozens of times.

This is an internal power struggle between leftists. I'm not involved or invited.

As I have said recently, western leftists tend to be prisses, while Eastern Leftists tend to be skullcrackers. It's always enjoyable when the two clash. The former generally go through real feelings of discomfort, as we see now. They always seem surprised that others don't respect their divine right to the head seat.

This is the second b!tchslapping episode re Putin v obamahollandekerry, and it won't be the last. Do you know what Putin is really after Tinker?
Nah, I have picked, "I don't want to be the world's policeman and I don't buy that we have brought stability to the world during our tenure as such."
I wonder what an eastern european would say these days.

Dominance of the oil routes to western Europe. The romance of the greater Russia and his vision of the Eurasian economic zone in the former USSR.

We don't have to wonder, there are several that post on this forum.

And Putin is dead sexy if eastern strongmen are your thing.

Bush was good at it Reagan was an imbecile who had a court astrologer, caused unemployment to skyrocket and pined for UFOs to invade so that humanity could unite against a common enemy.

Its much bigger than that.

It involves sending a nuclear warhead to your zip code. That's how grateful he is for your support. Al Quada is planning the same thing, after all the work you did for them.

I wouldn't know anything about that. What I do know about is Putin is the geopolitical operator of his era, in contrast to obamakerryhollande. Those guys can't find their own body parts on their own bodies searching with both hands. Have you seen any of cringey kerry comments? I can't believe we're from the same country.

Nothing you said was true. I think now your political movement is learning what the consequences are for being in opposition to truth (see upcoming Senate races and the GOP being the majority in every category). To think that when you had your moment to create the country you really wanted you squandered it completely, accomplishing nothing, while my ideology is on the rise and my post New Deal nation is in the offing.

Remains to be seen. Reports are that sanctions are actually hurting. I don't think Putin is planning on a mass annexation of the former Soviet Union.

Don't worry, this is all in the Bible. It's playing out in real time. It must be a strange feeling, working for the devil.

Whoah, dial back the racism a little bit. Although sometimes they act on it. It's getting to be that time.
Good thing they have you to put words in their mouths then.
It's not that hard. Unlike you I have studied for a few decades now the gratitude Eastern Europeans feel for Reagan and American Cold Warriors. We enjoyed supporting them. America of course does not support them now.
Remains to be seen. Reports are that sanctions are actually hurting.
Depends on the media products you consume. It's hilarious, the left thinks sanctions don't work based on Cuba, but they might work on Putin. You guys never cease to make me lol.

He's never not planned on it. His plans reach much farther than that.

spengler was fun as the grumpy ole man in the room on economic issues and running contrary to the mainstream on the outcomes of our debt based lifestyles and lack of real economic exports or relevance to the wider world.

i have always largely agreed with him on those issues and those issues alone - the rest is all a bit suspicious and clouded

Goldman is always more interesting on what issues to examine. His analytical tools are circumscribed, but his attention is not.

David, again and again, said, no nation can reverse falling "birth rate" .. Iran will die

well, folks

Iran's Parliament has passed legislation criminalizing "abortion, sterilization, vasectomies, tubectomies and any promotion of childbirth reduction" under penalty of two to five years in jail.

Let's see who is right , David or the Ayatollahs

Thank You Very Much for your post, Azari.

David, again and again, said, no nation can reverse falling "birth rate" ..
I disagree with David Goldman Spengler on this....

IF the nation involved is will to do Whatever Is Needed

Iran will die
Perhaps.....

IMO more Iran is more likely to die by getting into a Nuclear Tussle with Israel or some Sunni Power or US.....

At least a declining birthrate may give you time to try innovative ideas......

Do you think Iran is up for National Sex Days....

The equivalent of Make a Baby for Mother Russia as seen in Belarus IIRC.......

Strongly suggest using the carrot ;) too.....

Maybe subsidies of $10,000 per year per boy & $20,000 per year for girls who can have more babies while one boy can service many girls...

Also ease up on the no fun Islamic crap..... The Fashion Police etc..... Let the young people enjoy themselves as long as they keep making babies and taking care of them....

Even booze in moderation...... Enough to get the inhibitions down without impairing performance too much.....

Now don't ever say that Monster Gardener didn't try to help Iran......

Spengler discovers Old Virginny.......

Because a conflagration of this size needs to be appreciated. It's like Gen. Sherman sacking Atlanta all over again. Oh, lordy :
The essay below appeared in Asia Times Online on April 8, 2008. Apropos of the Ferguson riots it is reprinted below. It should make no-one happy. The crippling failure in American culture, I argue, is our refusal to come to terms with our own Civil War. This failure afflicts the conservative movement. For example: Last June I had the privilege to teach a course at the annual Acton University in Grand Rapids, MI. One of the keynote speakers was Judge Andrew Napolitano, whom I admire and whose remarks in the main I applauded. But Napolitano argued in passing that Lincoln had done a terrible thing by fighting the Civil War: surely, the judge said, he could have found a better way to end slavery than by tearing the country apart. That is utter nonsense for two reasons: the first is that a large part of the South was willing to die to preserve slavery, and the second is that the European imperial powers were already conspiring with elements of the South to expand slavery through Cuba, Mexico and Central America. If Lincoln had not fought the Civil War in 1861, the French invasion of Mexico in 1862 would have established a link with the Confederacy and prevented a Northern blockade.

Spengler's article reads like a book report of Thomas Sowell's White Liberals black Rednecks. How to get humans to abandon self-destructive cultures, especially when inculcated by POS parents, and reinforced by peers is a timeless, raceless, borderless problem for all.

Humans have a much higher tolerance for the pain we inflict upon ourselves than for the pain others inflict upon us.
