Folks,

I'm feeling optimistic about 2017. :) Hope it favours us all in some way.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson has a very valid point. Why do we pick Jan. 1st to celebrate a new year? It's somewhere in the middle of meteorological winter for many places but neither at the beginning nor the end. So winter is broken into two parts distributed between two consecutive years. durr...... why???.......'>.......

I would argue that the having the new year start coincide with the Winter Solstice, after which the days start to lengthen, would be a natural time point.

However, Christmas would then be early in the new year.

interestingly enough australia has 6 seasons, with high summer dry hotness and mid winter cold wetness split off from the less miserable portions of those seasons and this makes january quite a good split from december :)

Sorry about the Southern Hemispherism.

I was in the NTs during January once. It was the Big Wet. Rained non-stop for a week. Topped off by a cyclone that cut off Darwin for a few days.

Not large enough to cause any major damage, so I enjoyed myself the entire time.

In fact , that is how I learned water ski

Back in Iran, summers we used to go to Europe .. in Felden lake, Austria, there was something similar for water ski .. it was much cheaper than using a boat .. but more difficult as you were circling (though bigger radius)

That's how I learned water ski

Sorry, but it is tough for us heathens to keep up with the lunar calendar. It's like tracking your wife's menstrual cycle.....

note: in my area all liquor stores must be shut on good friday, this triggers an absurdity of panic buying the day before.
