Large 5.9M earthquake hits Christchurch
A large earthquake has hit Christchurch, injuring at least one person and disrupting power, phone services and retailers.

The magnitude 5.8 quake was 8km deep and centred 20km north east of Lyttelton. It struck at 1.58pm and was followed by a second sharp jolt a few minutes later. Several other aftershocks have also been recorded.

country town an hour south of me just dissapeared off the map from a monster bushfire.

only 2 deaths from old guys who wouldnt leave.

well away from me - we did have a small bushfire but it was contained early enough to avoid serious destruction.

in the monster fire 70,000 hectare was burnt out and it was large enough to create thunderstorms over it, which was very spectacular, if not terrifying.

the fire season hasnt even hit the bad part yet, which is late february.
