Good question Napster. What about China? IIRC, they have very large cities that aren't even connected to each other. Perhaps more like the City-States of Ancient Greece than any current Western parallels.

In the west we have cities like Boise, Salt Lake, Tucson/Pheonix, even Denver that are isolated and booming. Contrast that with a Spokane or Pocatello that struggle to keep pace, while neighbor Coeur d'Alene continues to grow.
