Re: Cool Maps
Very cool.
May the gods preserve and defend me from self-righteous altruists; I can defend myself from my enemies and my friends.
Re: Cool Maps
Have to hand it to Israel, they punch far far above their weight class.
Although most of the countries that dislike Israel can only dream of achieving Israel's level of development.
Also, "The Boys from Brazil" is a misnomer, it should be "The Boys from Argentina".

Re: Cool Maps
abandoned doesnt seem to fit into the same class of crime as not being able to play games for an evening.

Re: Cool Maps
only the most conformist and childish of cultures force everyone to go to work at the same time and deciding that instead of changing the alarm on a single clock, every clock in the land must change, is the height of authoritarian absurdity.
shame.
shame.

Turkey goes hard
and
the assaults of all types balkans has me picturing drop kicks for not finishing dinner.
Re: Cool Maps
heh.
on re reading, it seems to be done with an overly dramatic flair - "starvation" is probably going to bed without dinner (a common enough threat in my part of the world) and so abandonment is possibly a variation on the theme "go to your room".
perhaps...
those crazy turks.

Re: Cool Maps
Nah, I'm pretty sure the map is telling us that in Poland disobedience is at least a week without access to food.
We were more a "go to your room" sort of household, but never with the "without dinner" clause.
------------------------------
I think you are right about it being a (lousy) map with some language/cultural barriers. Germany being "no phone" while everyone else is "no games" sounds like the same thing (all those game apps and all) but one is pointing at the device and the others the activity. Starvation and abandonment are probably really uncharitable translations of "sent to their room".
---------------------------
Leaving aside physical stuff: I think the divide between social ostracizing (with the yelling)/ social isolation and denial of amusement/autonomy is somewhat interesting.

shouting and social isolation being *almost* as big a crime in certain circles as physical violence....NapLajoieonSteroids wrote: ↑Sat Jan 13, 2024 5:54 am
