Reading this carefully, a quantum deranged person may find some relief and resolve. It is as useless or useful as any other ontology, but could work as a placebo.
Being on the Crest of Becoming
Towards an Ontology of Constrained Actualization
Physics has become extraordinarily successful at predicting the behavior of nature. Yet its mathematical success has not been matched by ontological clarity. The wave function is variously described as a physical wave, a state of knowledge, a multiverse, or a mere computational tool. Measurement sometimes appears to interrupt the ordinary laws of nature. Time is said to flow, while relativity suggests that it does not. The block universe removes the flow altogether, but at the cost of treating every past and future event as equally real.
Perhaps these puzzles do not arise because the mathematics is wrong, but because our ontology is.
This proposal begins with an application of Occam's razor. Rather than multiplying entities—particles, waves, collapses, branching worlds, flowing time—we ask whether one coherent ontology can underlie them all.
The First Principle
There is no freedom without constraints.
A degree of freedom has meaning only relative to the constraints that define it. Remove all constraints and the very notion of a degree of freedom dissolves. Every physical system therefore consists not merely of degrees of freedom, but of degrees of freedom together with the constraints that shape their evolution.
Freedom and constraint are not opposites. They are complementary aspects of one reality.
The Nature of Physical Reality
Reality is not fundamentally made of particles.
Nor is it fundamentally made of waves.
Reality consists of continuously evolving degrees of freedom and the constraints that organize them.
Every interaction transforms both.
The universe is therefore not a collection of objects but a continuously evolving network of constrained possibility becoming constrained actuality.
Hilbert Space
Hilbert space is not the arena in which reality exists.
It is the mathematical representation of the evolving structure of available degrees of freedom and their constraints.
The wave function is therefore neither a physical substance nor merely subjective information.
It is a mathematical description of the structured possibilities available to the physical system.
Probability amplitudes describe the geometry of possibility, not a physical wave propagating through space.
Measurement
Measurement is not a special physical process.
Nature does not suddenly change its rules when a detector appears.
A measurement is simply an interaction whose outcome becomes amplified into a stable physical record.
Before measurement, the available possibilities are exactly represented by the evolving degrees of freedom and their constraints.
After interaction, one possibility has become an actual physical structure, and that actualization itself becomes a new constraint governing subsequent evolution.
Nothing mystical has occurred.
The same physical process operates before, during, and after every measurement.
Particles
Particles are not the fundamental building blocks of reality.
They are stable outcomes of previous interactions.
Whenever evolving degrees of freedom organize into persistent constrained structures, we recognize them as particles.
Particles are therefore not permanent substances.
They are stable organizations continually maintained by the ongoing process of constrained actualization.
Wave-Particle Duality
There is no need for matter to alternate between being a wave and being a particle.
The particle is the localized outcome.
The wave function describes the geometry of available possibilities.
The famous interference pattern of the double-slit experiment reflects the evolving possibility structure of the experimental arrangement, not a particle physically splitting and interfering with itself.
Opening or closing a slit changes the constraint structure of the entire system, thereby changing the geometry of possible actualizations.
Entanglement and Bell
Entangled systems are not mysterious because distant particles secretly communicate.
Nor must one conclude that all future outcomes already exist inside a timeless block universe.
Entanglement expresses the non-separability of the evolving constraint structure inherited from a common interaction.
Bell's theorem remains fully respected.
Its experimental predictions remain exactly correct.
What changes is the ontology.
Rather than assuming hidden variables attached to individual particles, the proposal treats the hidden element as the evolving constraint structure of the combined system itself.
Whether this structure ultimately modifies one of Bell's formal assumptions is not assumed in advance. It becomes a mathematical question rather than a philosophical one.
Classical Reality
Every interaction produces new constraints.
Every new constraint reduces future possibilities.
As constraints accumulate, stable structures emerge.
Classical objects are therefore not fundamentally different from quantum systems.
They are highly stabilized networks of accumulated constraints whose future possibilities have become extraordinarily restricted.
Classical reality is quantum reality viewed at the limit of massive accumulated constraint.
Time
The greatest ontological confusion may concern time itself.
Past and future do not physically exist.
Only actual interactions exist.
Every physical event is a now-event.
There is no universal cosmic present.
There are only local actualizations continuously transforming the universe.
History does not continue existing somewhere behind us.
Its consequences remain embodied in present constraint structures.
Likewise, the future does not already exist.
The future consists only of the constrained possibilities contained within the present.
Spacetime itself is therefore best understood as a mathematical representation of relationships among actualized events, not as a container in which all events eternally coexist.
The Fountain
A better metaphor than either the flowing river or the block universe is a fountain.
A fountain persists although none of its water remains.
Every droplet is continuously replaced.
Its identity lies not in permanent substance but in persistent organization.
Reality may be similar.
The universe is a continuously self-renewing fountain of constrained actualization.
Every interaction produces the next configuration.
Previous interactions no longer exist.
Future interactions do not yet exist.
Only the present organization exists.
Yet this present organization embodies all consequences of previous actualizations while simultaneously constraining all future possibilities.
Being and Becoming
This leads to a reversal of traditional metaphysics.
Being is not fundamental.
Becoming is.
Stable being emerges from continuous becoming.
Like the crest of an ocean wave, persistent structures exist only because they are continually recreated.
No water molecule remains in the crest.
Yet the crest persists.
Likewise, particles, organisms, minds, and galaxies are stable crests in the fountain of constrained actualization.
Being rides on the crest of becoming.
The Program
This ontology does not seek to replace quantum mechanics.
It seeks to reconstruct it.
Its central scientific question is therefore:
Can the full mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics—including Hilbert space, complex probability amplitudes, interference, the Born rule, entanglement, and Bell correlations—be derived from an ontology based solely upon evolving degrees of freedom and their constraints?
If the answer is yes, then the mathematics of quantum mechanics remains untouched.
Only our picture of reality changes.
The universe ceases to be a mysterious collection of particles, waves, collapses, branching worlds, and frozen blocks of spacetime.
Instead, it becomes one coherent process:
Reality is a continuously self-renewing fountain of constrained actualization. There is no freedom without constraints. There is no enduring being apart from becoming. And being itself rides forever on the crest of becoming

Sam and Michael are still enslaved in Egypt by naive realism, looking in the wrong direction where there is no promised land to solve the hard problem.
Juan Mozes Selman is pointing the way out, as usual:
If (!) the world as we experience it be is a representation—a map—then the physical brain is just another object on that map.
Asking how consciousness emerges from the experienced brain is like asking how your inner life emerges from a selfie, or how a living person could be resurrected from a photograph. That is indeed a very hard problem. It would mean we are trying to explain consciousness backwards. Like asking: "how does fire emerge from smoke?"
If this is the case, a more interesting question seems to be: how does the brain (the real one, not the selfie) convince itself that there is genuine hard problem, not being aware that it mistakenly reversed the causal arrow, making it unsolvable?
From experience we know the brain has many amazing tricks on its sleeve, create causal imagery that are mere appearances, often optical illusions. Creating a non-existing hard problem could be a piece of cake.

More of the same. Reminds me of my time as a participant and later moderator of an email discussion platform "Quantum Mind" in the end 90-ies, on invitation of Stuart Hameroff, University of Arizona, where the same endless discussions, theories and opinions between philosophers and scientists took place. It was like choking on a mountain of word salad.
By now the more interesting question to me is not what to think of consciousness, how to explain it, solving hard problems, how to fit it in the greater scheme of things, but asking why still there is no shared agreement, despite yeaaars of empirical science and a 20 fold amount of philosophical semantics. This is, ironically, maybe much easier to solve.

The First Empirical Fact About Consciousness
Before asking what consciousness is, it is worth noticing the most obvious empirical fact surrounding it: after more than a century of scientific investigation and millennia of philosophical reflection, there is still no sign of convergence.
That fact deserves to be taken seriously.
Science normally progresses toward consensus. Individual theories may survive for a while, but as evidence accumulates, the range of plausible explanations narrows. In consciousness research, the opposite seems to happen. New data continue to generate new interpretations. Materialism, idealism, dualism, illusionism, panpsychism, neutral monism, enactivism—each claims compatibility with much of the available evidence, yet they remain mutually incompatible.
The phenomenon requiring explanation, therefore, may not be consciousness itself, but the remarkable stability of disagreement about consciousness.
This does not demonstrate that every existing theory is false. It does, however, provide increasingly strong evidence that we may be asking questions that cannot be answered in the form in which they are posed. Perhaps we are searching in the wrong conceptual space. Perhaps we are trying to explain relationships that exist only within our models of reality rather than in reality itself.
History suggests that when inquiry reaches such an impasse, the solution is rarely another clever answer. More often, it is a better question.
Perhaps the real scientific challenge is not to explain consciousness, but to explain why consciousness has proven so resistant to explanation. If we can understand the source of our persistent non-convergence, we may discover that many of the so-called hard problems were artifacts of the conceptual framework with which we began.

More or less, yes. To use the analogy of the 5-star restaurant: what is prepared and cooked in the kitchen is the unconscious in relation to the customer enjoying (or hating) his/her dish while eating and digesting it. There is a feedback loop between the experience of the customer and the kitchen. "Was it to your satisfaction sir"? Etc.
Self-consciousness I would say can involve the abstract visualization of self as "other", but that builds on the more primal functional relationship of how the organism relates to its environment while navigating it. Which seems like how most animals function. Self-and-other operate more like a unitary movent. The distinction is there in the functional relationship, but for animals the self vs not-self does not seem like a useful abstraction. They are too busy living.
I suspect that the Enlightenment Industry, The War Against the Self ("It is an illusion!"), the Eckhart Tolle stuff.. all are driven by the same desire; to be more like an animal again. Or that young child... or even better, return to the Nirvana Baby state.
Tolle took his name from Meister Eckhart, famous Late Middle Ages Dominican. Contemporary with Dante.

A Modest Improvement to the Many-Worlds Interpretation
The many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics has always suffered from one unfortunate defect: it is nowhere near extravagant enough.
According to Everett, the wave function never collapses. Every quantum event gives birth to new branches of reality until existence resembles an infinitely reproducing cosmic hydra. Somewhere there is a universe in which Napoleon won at Waterloo, dinosaurs developed accounting, and Schrödinger's cat successfully sued its owner for emotional distress.
Most physicists stop there, apparently satisfied.
But why?
If one is already committed to an asymptotically infinite number of universes, surely a little additional absurdity can hardly be charged to the bill.
Consider instead the following possibility.
There is exactly one conscious observer in every branch.
Not one species.
Not one civilization.
One. You.
Immediately one objects that this is merely solipsism wearing a quantum costume. Precisely. Philosophy has always been more fashionable when dressed in mathematics.
The apparent problem is obvious. What about everyone else? Surely they are conscious too?
How would you know?
Every piece of evidence you possess about another person's consciousness appears inside your own consciousness. Their words, facial expressions, brain scans, declarations of love, complaints about Mondays—all of it arrives in precisely the same way as moonlight, the smell of coffee, or the image of Alpha Centauri.
As experiences.
Never as consciousness itself.
This is not even controversial. It is merely awkward.
Indeed, you have never met another consciousness.
You have only met extraordinarily convincing historical evidence that consciousness once appeared to exist somewhere outside yourself.
Notice the word history.
Everything you perceive is history.
The Andromeda galaxy is seen as it was over two million years ago.
The Sun belongs to eight minutes ago.
The table in front of you is a few nanoseconds old.
Your own hand is already part of the archaeological record by the time you become aware of it.
Reality, it turns out, is an exceptionally efficient museum.
The present itself is strangely absent from every exhibit.
Only your awareness occupies what could generously be called now.
Everything else has already become evidence.
This suggests an amusing revision of ontology.
Perhaps reality consists of a single conscious now-point travelling through an ever-expanding landscape of completed history.
A moving spotlight wandering through its own obituary.
Naturally this sounds ridiculous.
Fortunately, so did curved spacetime.
Now insert Everett back into the story.
Each quantum branching separates not merely possible futures, but conscious centers themselves.
Every observer continues—but never together.
Each branch contains precisely one "I."
Every version sincerely believes itself surrounded by billions of other conscious beings.
Every version is mistaken in exactly the same way.
The universe becomes a vast collection of perfectly isolated soap bubbles floating through metaphysical foam.
Each bubble contains one consciousness.
Each bubble also contains an impeccably documented history explaining why everyone else ought to be conscious.
Documentation, however, is not consciousness.
History has an impressive curriculum vitae but remarkably poor bedside manners.
The beautiful consequence is that nobody is ever lonely.
Everyone is.
Alone.
Completely.
And universally.
The social sciences remain intact, of course. Sociology simply becomes the study of interactions between highly sophisticated historical phenomena surrounding a single observer. Dinner parties continue exactly as before, except their metaphysical status changes from "shared experiences" to "astonishingly elaborate theatrical productions."
Psychology survives almost untouched.
Psychiatry acquires considerably more paperwork.
There are, admittedly, practical difficulties.
Suppose you stub your toe.
The pain feels undeniably real.
The table causing it is historical.
One begins to suspect history has become unnecessarily aggressive.
Or suppose someone tells you they have rich inner experiences just like yours.
What are the alternatives?
Either they truly do...
...or history has developed an impressive sense of humor.
To be fair, history has been displaying comic tendencies for billions of years.
It invented the platypus.
There is another pleasant feature of this theory.
It explains the oldest philosophical question of all.
Why am I me rather than somebody else?
Because there is no "somebody else" to be.
Every branch contains its own solitary first-person perspective.
Every observer wakes up as the unique center of actuality.
Every observer asks exactly the same question.
Every observer concludes, quite reasonably, that consciousness seems oddly private.
Every observer is correct.
And catastrophically wrong.
One should resist taking this proposal too seriously.
Not because it lacks evidence.
That has rarely stopped philosophy.
Nor because it is impossible to test.
That has occasionally encouraged philosophy.
Rather because the hypothesis possesses a dangerous property.
It explains almost everything while predicting almost nothing.
This is generally regarded as bad scientific practice but outstanding metaphysics.
Still, imagine for one irresistible moment that it were true.
Every friendship would become a dialogue with history.
Every love affair an encounter with exquisitely preserved evidence.
Every funeral merely history catching up with itself.
Even this essay would not really have been written by another conscious being.
It would simply be another artifact encountered along your unique journey through the museum of completed realities.
Which raises an uncomfortable possibility.
If you have found these ideas strangely persuasive, then perhaps I do not exist.
On the other hand...
if I do exist,
then perhaps you don't.
Fortunately, there exists an infinite number of universes in which each of us gets to be right.
Which, all things considered, seems like an admirably diplomatic solution.

The Right to Be Actual
Ontology, identity, and the psychological cost of explaining ourselves away
Modern science has become extraordinarily successful at explaining things in terms of other things. A sensation is explained in terms of neural activity, behaviour in terms of brain processes and developmental history, thought in terms of information processing, and the experience of being a self in terms of cognitive mechanisms.
There is nothing wrong with seeking such explanations. The problem begins when explanation quietly becomes negation.
Pain is no longer simply pain; it is really neural activity. Love is really chemistry. Colour is really electromagnetic radiation interpreted by a brain. Choice is really an outcome of processes already underway before we become conscious of them. And the person experiencing all of this is increasingly told that the self itself may be a construction or even an illusion.
Something peculiar has happened. The actual event—the very thing that occurred—has acquired a lower ontological status than the theoretical entities invoked to explain it.
The primacy of actual events suggests reversing this hierarchy.
An actual event does not need something behind it to make it actual. It simply occurred. Explanation can tell us about its history, relationships, constraints and consequences, but these do not confer actuality upon it.
This applies equally to private experiential events.
If I experience pain, the pain is an actual event. Neuroscience may tell us enormously important things about the conditions associated with it, but neural activity does not make the experience more real. If I experience being myself, that too is an actual event. Whatever ultimately constitutes the self, the present experience of being this particular person does not first require philosophical permission to exist.
This distinction may have consequences beyond philosophy. It raises a public-health question.
Ontological self-alienation
Human beings increasingly encounter narratives that invite them to distrust the reality most immediately available to them.
One version comes from popular interpretations of neuroscience and materialism: your experienced world is a construction of your brain; conscious decisions may originate unconsciously; the unified self is a model created by cognitive processes.
Another comes from popularized versions of Eastern and nondual philosophy: the ego is something to overcome, thought traps us, the separate self is an illusion, and the experienced world is maya.
These traditions are very different, and their sophisticated versions should not be reduced to such slogans. Nor does it follow that meditation, neuroscience or philosophical scepticism are psychologically harmful. They can plainly be beneficial.
But their simplified cultural messages can converge in a curious way.
The individual says:
I am here. I think. I want. I fear. I love. I suffer. I experience being me.
And philosophy, spirituality and science seem increasingly inclined to answer:
Yes, but that isn't really what is happening.
What does prolonged exposure to such narratives do to a person's relationship with his or her own existence?
That is an empirical question worth asking.
A person may no longer simply experience sadness but think: I am identifying with my sadness. Anger becomes my ego reacting. Thinking becomes something from which one should detach. The ordinary sense of being someone becomes evidence that one has failed to see through the illusion of self.
Suffering can then acquire a second layer: distrust of the person who is suffering.
This can become recursive. I observe my thoughts. Then I notice myself identifying with the observer. I am told that this observer is itself another construction. So I attempt to detach from that too.
A philosophy intended to liberate someone from excessive identification can, taken far enough, become a war against one's own actuality.
No war is necessary
The primacy of actual events offers a remarkably simple alternative.
A thought is an actual event.
A feeling is an actual event.
The experience of being a self is an actual event.
And, importantly, the meditative experience in which the self seems to disappear is an actual event too.
There is no reason to privilege the latter ontologically over the former. The experience I am this particular person does not prove a metaphysical theory of the self. But neither does the experience there is no separate self prove that selves are illusions. Both happened. Both belong to reality and both remain open to interpretation.
This is not an argument for believing everything we experience.
A hallucinated tiger does not establish that there is a tiger in the room. It does, however, establish that an experience of a tiger actually occurred.
That distinction is crucial:
Experience can be mistaken about something without being mistaken about having occurred.
We can therefore investigate, correct, reinterpret and sometimes resist our thoughts without first declaring them enemies. We can question our sense of self without trying to destroy it. We can understand the biological conditions of love without explaining love away.
Perhaps mental health requires something philosophically simpler than we have allowed ourselves.
Before explaining an experience, correcting it, transcending it or reducing it to something else, we can grant it the most elementary status possible:
This is happening.
And perhaps the same courtesy should be extended to the person to whom it is happening.
A public-health culture based on this principle would not teach people that their experience is infallible. It would teach something much more modest: their experience is actual.
Science can then investigate its relationships. Psychology can help us live with it. Philosophy can ask what it means.
But none of them needs to explain it out of existence first.
Being should be allowed to be actual before being explained.
