CNN

.

A sensational story is rocking Israel this week – alleging that the Israeli military defied orders from its commander in chief, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Leading Israeli journalist Ilana Dayan is reporting that Netanyahu ordered his military to prepare for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities nearly two years ago. Dayan's story documents that both the army chief and the head of Mossad (Israeli intelligence) refused to comply with Netanyahu’s order.

In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour Thursday, Dayan said the information came from officials who were in the room with Netanyahu when the conversations took place, during a meeting of Israeli ministers.

“It happened in the course of 2010 and all of a sudden, just when they are at the door, the chief of staff [of the Israel Defense Forces], then Gabi Ashkenazi, and the head of Mossad, Meir Dagan, are given an order by the Prime Minister Netanyahu to step into a pre-attack alert and be ready to strike in Iran.”

Dayan told Amanpour that she believes this is the closest Israel has ever come to striking Iran, but the dramatic rift between the military and political establishments stopped it.

“You have on the one side Prime Minister Netanyahu with a deep conviction…. And on the other hand, you have the chief of staff and the head of Mossad who very courageously set off the alarms and say, ‘Guys, this is not the right thing to do now. And if we step into this pre-attack alert, this is noisy; this can lock us into war.’”

Also speaking with Amanpour on Thursday, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister, Danny Ayalon, would neither confirm nor deny some parts of Dayan’s report.

While Ayalon implied there was not an order from Prime Minister Netanyahu, he did allude to disagreements between Netanyahu and the military.

“Israel is a democracy. And although we have very opinionated high brass…we're very proud that they can very freely actually give their opinions,” Ayalon said. “But at the end of the day, it's the commander in chief… to make the decisions. But the very fact that nothing happened means that the commander in chief in Israel did not give the order.”

What the world is telling Obama now

Israel’s tone on the issue of Iran’s nuclear program appears to have very quickly changed since President Obama’s reelection on Tuesday.

The Deputy Foreign Minister gave what could only be described as a ringing endorsement of the Obama administration’s handling of Iran.

Ayalon told Amanpour that despite past differences with the Obama administration over Iran, “I think today we can safely say that we are very much on the same page and will continue to follow the lead of the U.S.”

But Israel has not always said it would follow Obama’s lead. Israeli journalist Dayan says Ayalon’s comments to Amanpour are in stark contrast to what Netanyahu had told her just days before Obama’s reelection.

“[Netanyahu] very, very strongly said if the United States doesn’t do it, we’ll have to do it ourselves.”

Dayan now believes Israel has postponed a deadline on Iran until the spring of 2013.

The Iranian Ambassador to the U.N., Mohammad Khazaee, responded to the report Dayan’s program in a letter to the Security Council, saying, “The Islamic Republic of Iran expresses its strong protest and condemnation of such a provocative, unwarranted and irresponsible statement by the Israeli regime's prime minister. I wish to reiterate that the Islamic Republic of Iran has never had any intention of any attack on any other nation."

If someone doesn't attack Israel soon then Israel is on it's way to permanence. You may want to call some people. If Iran won't attack Israel, who ever will? Israel runs the table at that point.

The Israeli version of an "October Surprise:"

http://ca.reuters.com/article/topNews/i ... BE20121111
Israel says may escalate as Hamas joins Gaza clashes

By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Dan Williams

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel said it was poised to escalate attacks on the Gaza Strip on Sunday following a surge of rocket and mortar salvoes by Hamas and other Palestinian factions.

A missile strike wounded four Israeli troops on jeep patrol along the Gaza boundary on Saturday, triggering army shelling that killed four Palestinian civilians and, in turn, dozens of short-range rocket launches out of Gaza that paralyzed Israel's southern border towns.

Two Gaza militants died in the ensuing Israeli air strikes. Two workers were wounded later when a plastics factory in northern Gaza Strip caught fire after it was hit by an Israeli tank shell, emergency workers said.

...

But conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may be reluctant to seem weak ahead of a January 22 general election that opinion polls currently predict he will win.

HAARETZ : American Jews are giving up on Israel

.

The most worrying news that came out of the U.S. presidential elections was that American Jews seem to have lost interest in Israel.

The most worrying news that came out of the U.S. presidential elections was that American Jews seem to have lost interest in Israel. Just 10 percent of American-Jewish voters said Israel was their highest priority when they went to the polls, according to a recent exit poll conducted by the pro-peace Israel lobby J Street. Nine out of 10 said domestic issues like job rates and health care were their top concerns. This is despite the fact that the Republicans and Jewish activists, many of whom are supporters of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told countless horror stories about what they described as Barack Obama's plot to throw Israel to the Iranian wolves.

These statistics support the analysis of political commentator Peter Beinart, an associate professor at the City University of New York's Graduate School of Journalism, who argues that the ongoing occupation and the revelations of Israeli racism have distanced American Jews from Israel and from the Zionist idea.

J Street leaders are encouraged by the finding that 73 percent of U.S. Jewish voters approve of Obama's conduct regarding the Israeli-Arab conflict and note that 81 percent want active U.S. involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Big deal. If that's the case, why is the Obama administration continuing to fearfully dance attendance on Netanyahu?

What is prompting the administration to order the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, to secure European support to block the Palestinians from upgrading their UN status, thus risking Mahmoud Abbas' standing as Palestinian Authority president? And who is preventing Obama from giving Netanyahu a similar choice to the one that George H.W. Bush gave Yitzhak Shamir during Israel's 1992 election season, in which Bush said Israel could choose deadlocked negotiations and settlement expansion or an American "political umbrella" and financial aid? Netanyahu intervened in the U.S. elections so coarsely; why would Obama hesitate to get involved in the Israeli one?

The answers to these questions can be found in a new study of Israeli Jewish views by the Walter Lebach Institute for Jewish-Arab Coexistence through Education, at Tel Aviv University, which - especially when examined alongside other polls of Israeli attitudes toward the U.S. election - demonstrates the marked differences between Jewish Israeli voters and Jewish American ones.

Half the respondents said a majority of Jewish MKs should have to approve the evacuation of settlements, and 20 percent or less are concerned by the prospect of losing a Jewish majority in the country. About a third of secular respondents said the settlements are a legitimate aspect of Zionist history, and 80 percent of Israeli Jews said they don't think Israel and the Palestinians are likely to reach an agreement - a stark counterpoint to the roughly equal proportion of U.S. Jews who support American involvement in resolving the conflict.

And while nearly three-quarters of the U.S. Jews polled by J Street said they approved of the way Obama has been dealing with the conflict, Israeli polls have shown that most Israelis preferred Mitt Romney to Obama and did not want Obama to intervene in Israeli-Palestinian affairs.

I received an email over the weekend from someone who described himself as a longtime reader and a Meretz voter that shows why cautious Americans would be keeping their distance from Israel: "I realize that the arguments of the left are more complicated to explain than the fear and hatred propagated by the right," he wrote. "But you and your colleagues, the journalists of the left, have the obligation to analyze and explain, first of all, what has happened so far. What are the Palestinians seeking or suggesting, how has Israel violated the Oslo Accords? Why did the Camp David talks fail and why did the second intifada break out, why is Gaza still our responsibility and why are they firing on us from there?"

Israel engaging in targeted branding for their new war.

http://gawker.com/5960562/israel-names- ... -egyptians
If you speak Hebrew, the Israeli Defense Forces would like you to refer to the wave of assassination strikes it commenced in Gaza today as "Pillar of Cloud," a Biblical reference to the form God adopted in order to protect the Children of Israel and strike terror into the heart of Egyptians. If you speak English, it would prefer you to use the less fanatical "Pillar of Defense."

All agreed that "Operation pump missiles into densely populated refugee camp" would not catch on.
