Margaret Thatcher, England's Great Iron Lady, Dies - Rest in Peace

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: "The Queen was sad to hear the news of the death of Baroness Thatcher. Her Majesty will be sending a private message of sympathy to the family." David Cameron, the current prime minister, said: "It was with great sadness that l learned of Lady Thatcher's death. We've lost a great leader, a great prime minister and a great Briton.

Rust in peace?

I recall that some credited [or criticized] her with having changed British society. How enduring is her legacy?

Sad to say that Gerry Adams had the most accurate take so far:
Margaret Thatcher did great hurt to the Irish and British people during her time as British Prime Minister.

Working class communities were devastated in Britain because of her policies.

Her role in international affairs was equally belligerent whether in support of the Chilean dictator Pinochet, her opposition to sanctions against apartheid South Africa; and her support for the Khmer Rouge.

Here in Ireland her espousal of old draconian militaristic policies prolonged the war and caused great suffering. She embraced censorship, collusion and the killing of citizens by covert operations, including the targeting of solicitors like Pat Finucane, alongside more open military operations and refused to recognise the rights of citizens to vote for parties of their choice.

Her failed efforts to criminalise the republican struggle and the political prisoners is part of her legacy.

FT - ‘Iron Lady’ who remade Britain

Key word here is REMADE

Thatcher and Churchill same sh*it .. and .. they will effect the same outcome for Britain

Churchill lost the empire the old fashion way, with a war with another beast like himself

Thatcher did not realize times have changed, still guarding the imperial mindset that will lead for Britain to lose in the new world order

She will be judged in history as a failure

Thank You VERY Much for your post, Typhoon.
Rust in peace?
Clever ;)

But as a chemist, I'm fairly sure Margaret took her chromium and nickel pills on schedule to keep her strength up and prevent oxidation ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stainless_steel

Plus Passivation ;) Protects against Rust

Her school reports showed hard work and continual improvement; her extracurricular activities included the piano, field hockey, poetry recitals, swimming and walking.[9][10] She was head girl in 1942–43.[11] In her upper sixth year she applied for a scholarship to study chemistry at Somerville College, Oxford, but was initially rejected, and was offered a place only after another candidate withdrew.[12][13] She arrived at Oxford in 1943 and graduated in 1947 with Second Class Honours in the four-year Chemistry Bachelor of Science degree; in her final year she specialised in X-ray crystallography under the supervision of Dorothy Hodgkin.[14][15]

Wondering whether being a educated as a "hard" scientist instead of being a litigation trickster  oops I mean a lawyer*, made a difference in the type of politician Margaret Thatcher became......

I now recall that Britain was "bankrupt" in 1976 and had to be "rescued" by the IMF.

Former PM Thatcher's policies were, again from what I recall, a response to this situation.

Although one could argue that deregulation of the financial industry has lead to a similar situation today.

Reconsidering the Adams piece, he correctly criticizes her support for Pinochet, but leaves out her opposition to the ANC and tacit support for the Apartheid regime in South Africa. His overemphasis on Irish issues also ignores the specific harm done to e.g. Welsh miners.

Also interesting are the similarities between her and Reagan. Both lionized by conservatives, both with records of conduct very much at odds with the legacy, both died shitting into diapers with their brains turned to mush.

So Adams disagrees with her foreign policy. So what?

S Africa today is, regrettably, worse off today than even the worst scenario of the most pro-apartheid Afrikaaner.

Don't know about Welsh miners, but my guess is that their mines had long ceased to be economically viable.

The odds are, unfortunately, quite high for many people in the industrialized world, yourself included, for ending their days in the same way.

thatcher is pretty much the poster child for the argument raging across the west right now in all countries and the last decade of ranting on these forums.

some think she took a country going backwards from being riddled with debt and built the prosperity that followed by making the hard cuts required.
others dont really care about such things and think she was an evil monster that destroyed all the social security payments and arts funding.

Foreign and domestic policy. He also happens to be right.

 You sure that's the stand you want to take? "She was right to support Apartheid."

Aren't we squeamish. You'd think with all the atrocities discussed (or advocated) on this forum it wouldn't be smirking at the twilight years of wealthy, powerful, white war criminals that would invite disapproving clucks.

But no matter. I'm told they are literally dancing in the streets with joy in Glasgow. Go take it up with them.

im not sure 300 arts students really counts as a "dancing on the streets"
More than 300 people gathered in Glasgow city centre last night to “celebrate” the death of Baroness Thatcher.

Members of organisations including the Anti-Bedroom Tax Federation, the Communist Party, the Socialist Party, the

Socialist Workers Party and the International Socialist Group, were joined by the public.

I was basing that on tweets, so what can I tell you. Either they were exaggerating, or there was another party that the reporter for the Scotsman wasn't at.

Even Morrissey is piling on. Probably the only time I'll ever get to quote him.
Thatcher is remembered as The Iron Lady only because she possessed completely negative traits such as persistent stubbornness and a determined refusal to listen to others.

Every move she made was charged by negativity; she destroyed the British manufacturing industry, she hated the miners, she hated the arts, she hated the Irish Freedom Fighters and allowed them to die, she hated the English poor and did nothing at all to help them, she hated Greenpeace and environmental protectionists, she was the only European political leader who opposed a ban on the ivory trade, she had no wit and no warmth and even her own cabinet booted her out. She gave the order to blow up The Belgrano even though it was outside of the Malvinas Exclusion Zone—and was sailing AWAY from the islands! When the young Argentinean boys aboard The Belgrano had suffered a most appalling and unjust death, Thatcher gave the thumbs-up sign for the British press.

Iron? No. Barbaric? Yes. She hated feminists even though it was largely due to the progression of the women's movement that the British people allowed themselves to accept that a prime minister could actually be female. But because of Thatcher, there will never again be another woman in power in British politics, and rather than opening that particular door for other women, she closed it.

Thatcher will only be fondly remembered by sentimentalists who did not suffer under her leadership, but the majority of British working people have forgotten her already, and the people of Argentina will be celebrating her death. As a matter of recorded fact, Thatcher was a terror without an atom of humanity.

Yeah, that can happen. But it was also part of this extremist economic cult that we've been saddled with that calls itself 'Conservatism' but has little or nothing to do with actually conserving what was great about our culture. Right-wing Commies.

well as stated many times the ultras from both sides look more simmilar than different to me and both abound in absurdist contradictory meaningless twaddle.

welsh coal miners are the darlings of the ultra lefties now.. deary me .. let me find my environmentalist vandals who need to be punished articles :)

government needs to be brought back into budget via reduction in left and right wing pet projects and the west needs to grow up into the modern realities on both sides.

That's because at the end of it it's all just a rationalization about why oneself should have the ability to tell everyone what to do. I am told it's a service by politicians and executives everywhere.

The working stiff who gets shafted is the common refrain of the lefty's dirge. Though on the environment, read up on Exxon's media blackout regarding the oil spill in Arkansas. They are having the Sheriff's department arrest reporters.

Those sorts of ideas are so obsolete, I wish we would stop even trying to worry about it. The largest corporation is the government. That's basically it. So either you have a government where you are ostensibly a shareholder, or well...you have Rome. I mean do you really want to be ruled by a consortium of GE, Exxon, and Monsanto? Because that seems to be the alternative to the government right now. Or not even looking like so much of an alternative right now.

I think we have passed the threshold of Global Fascist Regime already.

well, exxon surprises me not - the point was about how the lefty dirge is lost on alot of us working stiffs.. they also would have shut down the coal mines but they would have had more empathetic speeches and nicer rhetoric about destroying my lifestyle and then got all upset and called me stupid when i couldnt tell the difference between them and the "other mob" .... they care, thats the difference... apparently... or something.

not arguing against that perspective, its an aspect of the truth and correct for that...i also believe having a 1 in many millions voice is having no voice at all so your distinction between a shareholder or rome is essentially meaningless to me.

another aspect of the truth is that if you do believe in the concept of independant self reponsible adults then you also need to put a voice for that into the mix aswell... close to 50% of the population finds that rhetoric appealing even if they dont actually live it..

The quasi-hagiographies now pouring in has less to do with any ostensible agreement with her policies or analysis of their impact, but rather an instinctual nostalgia now nurtured by our ever protean, centrifugal, and distorting multimedia cycle that sends even the most level headed grasping at something that remotely seems of antiquity, clarity, and stability.

Quite enduring, but perhaps with a little rust.

Perhaps her most enduring legacy is the return of democracy to Argentina. When she had the Royal Navy retake the Falkland Islands, it led to the collapse of the military junta ruling Argentina, much to the dismay of Ronald Reagan, who wanted to avoid "humiliating" the junta.

The man makes good points. And it's good that he brought up Thatcher's support of the Khmer Rouge (Reagan supported them, too), which the US corporate media tends to sweep under the rug. And Ms. T supported Saddam. Well, I guess it was the thing to do.

So, she wasn't always on the right side of history.
