Alas, The Smoke dissipated almost as quickly as they formed. That song, as it began to climb the UK charts, was formally banned from the BBC for allegedly promoting LSD with that song and killed any momentum that the group had.

I came across them as part of the "missing link" acts that sort of fit in the gap between late 65 and 67 in British pop.

The biggest cultural difference, as the argument goes, is that psychedelia in the UK was very closely associated to British pop-R&B* whereas in the US it was tied to folk. What happens is a soup of sound that eventually emerges hard rock and prog.

*and by British pop R&B they mean the Yardbirds and Rolling Stones and the early, aggressive Kinks.

While some individuals went on to have long careers, none of these acts had much of a future because they hadn't a chance to make it in the US, audaciously as "R&B".

The Pink Floyd, going by their 1965, is maybe the one exception but they had they were savvy enough to supplement whatever their live act jam band psychedelia was with strange singles that were English folk-based with whimsical lyrics that were at home with Wyndham Lewis or Lewis Carroll. Or, in other words, singles that had a small chance to fit in with the expectations of the American market with the rest of the "folk-psychedelia".

The lyrics are sanitized on Kid Ory’s recording of the most popular funeral song in New Orleans, but the clarinet keeps dropping in like an angel.
