This seems to me a correct analysis. If Trump is trapped in a situation where he can neither win the war nor bring home “a good deal” — a deal that means little and is not future-proof — then he has failed. The theocratic Mahdi mad dog remains alive, may simply refrain from biting for a while, and wait until Trump is gone and replaced by someone like J.D. Vance: more of an isolationist, a devout and thoroughly brainwashed Christian who does not particularly like wars and, understandably, is not especially fond of Israel either.

My general suspicion is that there is always more money and power to follow, sure. However, the core drivers of anything - a more serious suspicion I have - are usually simple ape-like needs and trigger-response mechanisms. Most people don't like it because as a human ape, we all are masters of the imaginary and once it starts to dominate the real, all bets are off. (Maybe not a coincidence that in this era, "the virtual" as a concept is becoming very meaningful, when the distance to the real is growing. )
