I know nada about php, but was able to intuit my way through several problems I encountered due to general software experience.

While waiting for the new phpBB software to upload via ftp it occurred to me that social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. have brought forums to the masses. For example, setting up a FB Group page is trivial compared to installing and maintaining a phpBB forum.
Sadly to say you are quite right. I remember when AOL users were first able to use the internet. Seemed like the IQ of internet users was cut in half over night. I am not kidding. Outside of Usenet, people were much more polite as well.

Does anyone remember Iphone(Not the apple version) ICQ, Freetel, telenet, plus a whole bunch more? Back then it seemed like a new really cool app came out every day.

Can't say that I have.

The forum software is long overdue for an upgrade. May do it after Christmas or during the New Year holiday.
Sounds reasonable. Any chance the new version will have answered post notifications?
Don't know. Will have to see what new options are available after installation. Will check.
Also I haven't checked yet, but will Twitter posts show up here now if linked to?

Guess not :(

I have not yet had an opportunity to review the current extensions available in phpBB 3.2.x.

[Have not yet gotten around to changing the "phpBB" back to "Earth rise".]

When I do, I'll keep embedding/displaying Twitter and other social media in mind.

I can't log in when using Firefox. I'm getting the "The submitted form was invalid. Try submitting again." error.

I can still log in with Chrome so addressing this should not be a priority.

Check your settings in Firefox. It may be something to do with cookies and privacy settings. I can log in with Firefox.

CS here.

Sorry about the log-in inconvenience.

What forum time I have has recently been spent trying to solve an upgrade problem.
Unfortunately the phpBB support forum has proven to be less than useless.
However, I think I've located the source of the problem.

Is anyone [noddy?] familiar with SQL, especially .sql files.
It seems that I need to edit out an old entry in a set of such such files.

I can do SQL when I have to, its been a while since I did it for money, but I doubt its that difficult, it rarely is.

I only have a simple question as I can write a Python program to do what I need.

Searching through the SQL files in the directory /store
of the type backup_[ID consisting of letters + numbers].sql

I found the following long line

INSERT INTO phpbb_modules (module_id, module_enabled, module_display, module_basename, module_class, parent_id, left_id, right_id, module_langname, module_mode, module_auth)
VALUES (1, 1, 1, '', 'acp', 0, 1, 68, 'ACP_CAT_GENERAL', '', ''),...,
(220, 1, 1, 'acp_shareon', 'acp', 219, 287, 288, 'SO_CONFIG', 'settings', 'acl_a_board'),...

As 'acp_shareon' no longer exists, I guess [as I'm unfamiliar with SQL] that this generates the error message:

(220, 1, 1, 'acp_shareon', 'acp', 219, 287, 288, 'SO_CONFIG', 'settings', 'acl_a_board')

Two options:

1/ Change the module_enabled, module_display indices to 0, 0.

2/ Edit out via a program, as there are lots of .sql files, this part of the line

(220, 1, 1, 'acp_shareon', 'acp', 219, 287, 288, 'SO_CONFIG', 'settings', 'acl_a_board')

But do I have to also update some of the other indices in adjacent (...) so as not break some links?

removing the offending line should be sufficient - making sure your commas are still sanely seperating the value rows.

it is possibly breaking because it doesnt exist in the other reference table already, Id need the error message to be sure.

if you have shell access to the machine, then stashing away the line

INSERT INTO phpbb_modules (module_id, module_enabled, module_display, module_basename, module_class, parent_id, left_id, right_id, module_langname, module_mode, module_auth) VALUES (220, 1, 1, 'acp_shareon', 'acp', 219, 287, 288, 'SO_CONFIG', 'settings', 'acl_a_board')

would allow you to fire up the postgres ? mysql ? console shell thing and running it manually later if it does break something bad :)

Upgrading to phpBB 3.2.8 unfortunately did not solve this issue.
